Cost of Import engine vs rebuild - mk3 Gti

Post by theunis.visser »

I would like to hear your opinions as I need to make a decision on a project I wish to start.

The current engine is (to the best of my knowledge) been rebuilt, but seller says it was poorly done.

My thinking has always been to rebuild rather than replace ( no VIN issues, police clearance and data dot, etc..)

Question is though with so many engine importers around I can't help but wonder if it could possibly be more cost effective to purchase a low mileage import rather than do a rebuild?

Has anyone done math in this regard?

Would really appreciate your input.

Thank you

It depends on what needs to be done on the rebuild.

It could be as simple as a hone, fresh rings and a gasket kit or it could be a complete rebuild with reboring plus new pistons, crank cutting plus new bearings, new oil pump, head reconditioning with new valve guides which means costly engineering and parts.....

The only way to really tell is to strip the motor and see what needs to be done.

Yup done the math for lots of people.
If you do a half assed rebuild it's possible to beat the cost of an import.
If you do a proper rebuild that includes new guides, valve seats cut and new stem seals for the head, new pistons and a rebore with all the new bearings and gaskets then no not even remotely. A full rebuild will be around 14k+
