1500 - JB Engine

Post by JunaVivo »

Hi guys

I have a mk1 1500 Gls.

Im just curious to know if it is possible to convert to 1800, by using the 1.8 pistons and crank on the 1500 JB block?

Secondly, will the 1.6 mp9 head be compatible with this block?

Thanks

Aaaaand it probably has the 4+E gearbox ... that alone will drive you to drink faster than its 0-60 km/h time!

That model is probably VW's worst offering - even the 1100 had more oomph.

Not sure I can agree with that was my first car and it certainly showed an 1100 a clean pair of heels. I had the 4 speed version though.
I would do an very impressive 150 ish topend
You can't use the modern cranks as the journal sizes are different and the modern heads have an oil return that the block does not have

Aha...thanx for clearing that up Panic, appreciated.

@ supervan - Im running a 5 speed box and electronic distributor setup so to be honest she's not that bad mate for her age.

So i suppose my only other option in terms of performance upgrade would be an engine swop, which i was trying to avoid.

Same engine and gearbox as in my GLS, no issues with it but then the last thing I want when getting in her is to drive around at ludicrous speeds.

Doing a lot of mileage in Citis lately and must say that I often giggle thinking about the mishaps as a youth harnessing all that power

Please don't!

You will destroy her character and value :fear:

Won't a Weber and gasflow enhance enough maybe?

While you are here, I was told years ago that the JB engines used the same head as 1.6 motors but that the block is slightly shorter?

FR and JB (1600) was basically identical block and head. The crankmstroke was just shorter on the 1.5.

I know what you mean - same here, I actually enjoy driving her at the speed limits/cruising.

I use her daily (Roodepoort - Sandton) so was just looking at getting abit more economy and power whilst trying to keep it original as possible hence the initial question.

@ Wolf - Gas flow and weber (old skool) could probably work, but it would need to be tuned properly to ensure optimum economy & performance.
Is this possible, can weber carbs provide reasonable fuel consumption?

If you are getting anything in the line of 10km/l then that is what you can expect.
Even a more modern engine is not going to give anything better. They have the aerodynamics of a brick outhouse and that is it.
Your upgrade path is to find a FR crank and pistons and thatbis about it if you don't want to fit say a 1.8 newer motor.
