Mk3 GS
Hi guys
So I recently bought a 1995 Golf 3 GS
Seemed in a ready good condition
But the longer I own the car the problems I pick up
Anyways I plan on getting this car in a perfect running condition and take it to shows
Will upload pics when time and I get the car clean
I wanted to find out though about a few things
I serviced the car (oil; filters etc)
Car smokes still and I get a petrol smell while driving
I did change a few pipes that really needed to be changed
The car smokes a bit - think I need to do head gasket
Also the car is really sluggish for a 1600
And fuel consumption isn't really great either
Any help would be appreciated with someone I can take it to or even advise on doing it myself?

Re: Mk3 GS
Hi bud . Mk3 are not really the race stallions of the vw stable . But there is a few things that could be causing the fuel smell.i had issues of over fueling, bad timing etc .that caused performance loss. I would suggest taking the car in to reputable mac .(there are some on the forum)and let then do what they do best .trying to isolate the problem yourself could be more expensive .SDAYA wrote:Hi guys

Re: Mk3 GS
Not sure how changing a head gasket is going to fix a smoking problem.
When does it smoke. When pulling with lots of throttle or on idle or when running against compression and then goes away when you add throttle?

Re: Mk3 GS
I know there's a leak cause when I sprayed water the isle changed slightly for a bit so I do need to change gasket.panic-mechanic wrote:Not sure how changing a head gasket is going to fix a smoking problem.

The car smokes a little when idling. I'm not sure if it smokes while driving, haven't noticed or it's no that much.
I know the car is currently over fueling - it's really bad standing outside while car is idling.
I've changed all the petrol pipes yesterday.
And also checked if there's a leak in the exhaust

Re: Mk3 GS
Well ok then. Maybe change the intake manifold gasket rather than the head gasket for that...

I think I should change all gaskets at this pointpanic-mechanic wrote:Well ok then. Maybe change the intake manifold gasket rather than the head gasket for that...
Previous owner didn't take care
Water pipes were full of rust
So I flushed everything and replaced the water pipe
Hope everything goes well
I'm thinking of doing a G60 swap

Re: Mk3 GS
Have a compression test done. If mileage is 150K+, then the oil rings could be going, causing the smoke
If the compression comes in below spec, then the compression rings would also be gone.
