As far as I know, it wasn't offered in SA, it was discontinued a while before the Golf was introduced here.

I knew you'd answer. I saw an old school Mk1 that had the swallowtail back. I have the '80 model with the straight back. i think that it might have been imported or he somehow done some work to it to get the look.

VWSA may have brought in some test mules but Swallowtails were only made in late '74 and '75 with a few very rare Rabbits in '76. Golfs were only introduced in South Africa in '78 so we never got the Swallowtail. I have seen one or two custom Swallowtails overseas but they only had a similar rear end and none of the other Swallowtail defining features.

Interesting. I know the rear end is different as well as some cosmetic differences like the dash.

They're gorgeous though

There are a lot of differences, the most notable being the rear, bonnet, a pillar and the dashboard. The link I posted above has 66 possible differences depending on the time of manufacture.

Don't get me started, most uneducated VW enthusiasts in South Africa label a Series I MkI Golf as a Rabbit

First hing my friends said when i bought the 1980 Golf was "Geez thats a decent looking Rabbit" annoying to say the least

Rabbit was America and Canada only, with the bulk being made in Westmoreland but early ones and a lot of the Canadian ones were German made ('76 - '78 for the US and up to '80 for Canada). We never ever got the MkI Rabbit although there are a few examples here but all are imports and I have only ever seen one on the road, a Cabriolet at Angela's Picnic a few years back. There was of course the MkV Rabbit but that was North America only, maybe only US, from what I know.
