How to replace driveshaft Citi

Post by 175SBU »

Done on Citi Golf:

VW part number
Image

Tools that i used
Image

Hammer
6 Allen key
Torque wrench, i dont have a powerbar
17, 19, 30 sockets
17 Spanner
Ratchet

Jack the car and support with jack stands

Loosen the wheel hub nut 30
Image

Looses the inner cv, i converted mine to allen key.
Image

Image

Loosen the rack end 19mm
Image

Moer this end with a hammer until it pop out, taking care not to damage the grease cover. Do not hit with nut still attached.
Image

Image

Now loosen the ball joint 17 spanner and socket on the other end.
Image

Push the control arm down until the balljoint pops out.
Image

Now you can drop the inner cv down and loosen the hub nut to free the outer cv.

Image

Remove the driveshaft.
Image

Clean old grease
Image

Insert the shaft, i found it easier to start with the inner cv and securing with at least 4.
Image
Image

Now you can insert the inner cv
Image

Secure the hub nut back
Image

Now you are ready to put everything back together and tighten where it needs tightening.

Awesome guide man

However, why do those shafts look like they're different lenghts? I know the Citi's had different shaft lengths depending on something or other.

Does look a bit long, that will eat the seal on the inside of the cv cup

How to replace driveshaft Citi

They are the same length, remember that the old one has been in the car since 2006 and the new one is still a virgin tight as ass, it was virtually impossible to bend it side to side or in and out hence I started with the inner side first.

Doing this was almost impossible Image

The seal on the inner cup looks like it was eaten already. You should have changed that as well.

You can get the shafts in without removing the tie rods. It is less hassle to loosen the control arm rather than moering out the tie rod and risk damaging them.

Was thinking the same. It's the way I used to do it.

The inner bolts of the Control arms, and while they out, you should install a lower strut brace while you down there...
