Mk1 Golf to TDi?

Post by Mk1Crazee »

Hey guys

found a smashed 2005 Polo 1.9 TDi.

Body is far gone but the motor and other internals are all in order. Just need to get another radiator and intercooler.

No my question is. How hard will it be to convert a Mk1 Golf (Petrol internals) to running the 1.9 TDi setup?

I'm just doing as much research as possible, budget won't be an issue.

Guidance needed from the forum gods

There is a guy in bloem that has a tdi caddy. I think he also used a polo tdi motor. So strange hearing a caddy that sounds like a polo tdi

Not any more difficult than putting a 1.8T with oem management into a Mk1, if you have a whole car as a donor. You will need to swap over the motor, gearbox, engine loom, pedal, all engine related sensors and cluster and have the immobiliser defeated on the ecu. You will also need the pump, not sure how the tank works with the PD motors. Additionally you will have to ground out or code out the various warning lights on the cluster like ABS/Airbags etc. It will be a great conversion though if you're willing to spend the time organising the wiring.

I saw a video of the caddy Chucker was talking about. That thing was maaaaad.

It can be done, true

Can you do it? Well that depends. How good is your welding and fabrication skill? Can you do car wiring?

Lastly decide how much time you are prepared to invest into the project. The aforementioned Caddy, the builder was expert welder and a mechanic by profession and it still took him more than 10 months to complete.

Seems the wiring is the most time consuming, none of the engine mountings are damaged so i guess i could just weld those on to the golf.

I have experience wiring Fi cars just never did a Tdi before, hoping its similar.

Picked the polo up for R22k

Motor seems healthy though.

Anything else i need to know?

Will keep you guys posted, thanks for the responses

It is an awesome conversion if you have the patience tomsee it through. You have to move the fuel, cooler too if there is one on that car.

I was thinking that. Would it be a good idea to cool the fuel on the return to tank?

Should be an interesting build project, start a ride thread of the project.

I remember some time ago, coming across a bettle with a 1.9tdi motor and it sounded good.

It wasn't a build thread or about the engine at all. It really was about the okes body work. He has a body shop...

It perfectly answers whether a modern TDi conversion in to a Mk1 shell can be done as well as the standard that can be achieved.

There is a guide for the conversion online, I used a great guide put together by 'rubjohnny' that detailed the splicing of wires from the ecu and loom into both the CE1 and CE2 fuseboxes. There is a similar guide for the tdi if photorekit hasn't killed it.
