2.0L jetta mk3 keeps stalling around 100km/h

Post by Jerome Jacobs »

Hi guys I'm pretty new to this forum but here goes.

Well i have a 1998 Volkswagen Jetta CSL 2.0L
It starts well, drives comfortably and picks up speed well too. But my problem starts when hit a speed around 100km/h to 120km/h. The car starts jerking and the engine dies then i have to kickstart it to get it going again... My fan also doesn't work automatically anymore it has to be connected to the battery dircetly In order for it to work,so could this be an overheating problem?
I also think there could be some blocked off ends to the water housing where hoses should be connected(the work of a bad mechanic).

Your help would be greatly appreciated... Thanks in advance.

What fuelling system IE carb or injection.
Have you tested at the point of dying if there is spark and or if fuel.
Sort the fans and the water routing things then the rest.

so carb it can be the fuel pump or the float level can be set too low. You need to do some testing ie. check if there is fuel at the carb at that stage.
when has the filter been replaced if it has one.

I replaced the filter earlier this year, around February
And i should add that i swopped the fuel pump from a mechanical pump to an electric one... Could this be a factor?

Thanks again

Yes it could if there is issues with how much it supplies. Why not just use the good old mecahnical pump. They are prefectly adequate and correct for the job.

If you have not fiddled with it in the first place it is unlikely to be that so start with fuel supply.

No i haven't fiddled with it,but I do have a feeling that it might be the carb float level, because i a friend of mine had a similar issue with his car and that was it.

There Is a plastic cap behind where the fuel pipe goes in the carb. Pry It out and underneath sits the seat of the float needle and seat. Adjusting it out raises the float level. Too much and the car will flood.

what is that big flat screw on top of the carb just next to the fuel inlet, looks like you can screw it out with a big flat screw driver
Reason for asking is because my caddy also have a slight jerk at around 100km/h if you keep the throttle at a certain place constantly but if you give more throttle it pulls fine

I bought new spark plugs,a new cone filter and carb cover , adjusted the timing and bought a new battery and the car seems to be running fine now

Another question i have is when i put the new battery in,both the clock and kilometer gauge don't stay on unless i turn the key(it used to stay on when the car was off) and that causes the clock to reset every time i turn the key and the cd player won't work(it doesn't seem to be getting any power anymore)

Thanks in advance :)

lean on the primary circuit. nothing to do with float level. Low float level shows when you have your foot flat and demand a lot from the engine.
So if it is ok when you give more throttle it is not float level.

Wtf. Short of driving there and doing it for you you also never bothered with feedback on some of the questions I asked you.
Doing this on the net is an interactive thing, you have to go and do or test some of what we suggest, the thing won't just fix itself with replies we give you.
Hope you enjoy your golf.

I'm sorry Panic for any misunderstanding

But i said i bought new spark plugs, carb cover with a cone filter, new battery and the car was running fine.
However i got no reply to my question about the clock and radio not working. But i got that fixed.
I did try everything you said and the car was fixed
I bought the golf because i wanted a Vr6

I provided feedback
If it wasn't clear enough i apologize but there's no need for any vulgar language or rudeness.

Replies are voluntary and done for no reward. There is nothing that compels me or anybody from any point of view to come and help people. If you complain that you sold a car becuase nobody replied to one of your questions then you might expect the get a rude reply.

I wanted to fix the car in order to sell it, that was my goal.
The car was completely fixed like i just said.

And i wasn't complaining... I just mentioned the fact that i didn't get a reply. No disrespect was intended , i was just grateful for the help i received, because i actually know that everyone on this forum provides help voluntary.

If that offended you,you have apologies.
And thanks once again.

Huh, a 1998 Jetta CSL 2.0?????

1. IIRC, all A3 Jettas were FI since late 1996;
2. CSL model was a 1600?

Unless, of course the engine was transplanted ...

Yup. CSL was a 1600. I had a white one. CLX was 1800 an CLI was 2.0 if I remember.
