Vw mk3 jetta clx

Post by amaniveld »

Good day guys
Did the 2 litre agg conversion and now sitting with 1 issue, fuel pump/ tank set up.
Do I really need to change the tank to a fuel injected model - cli? Whats the difference between carb tank and fuel injected tank????
Regards Andrew

You dont need to change to the FI tank. You can run an ext fuel pump as long as jou have a return line to the tank you are fine. Make sure you run a decent inline filter as well not that cheap plastic carb filters.

I quite disagree with you on that.

Injection tank has the outlet at the bottom of the tank. It gravity feeds the pump. In citi/mk1
In mk3 the injection tank has the pump inside the tank so it sits submerged in fuel and just has to push

Carb tank has the outlet at the top so you have to suck it up against gravity.
Carburetor pump are diapraghm pumps and they are designed to suck.
Roller cell pumps( injection pumps) are not designed to suck and quit frankly they suck at it.
So if you use a carb tanks and make a injection pump suck they fuel it does 2 things.
1) shorten the pump life and they are always more noisy
2) they surge badly once the tank is under half.
But go ahead. Install it on the carb tank. Come report back after a few years.

yup sorry I forgot about the location of the feed on the carb tank, as Panic stats it wont work lekker, it will be better to change to the FI tank because of the feed pipe location etc

Hi. I don't know how the mk3 works but I did a agg injection on my Mk2 jetta csx which was carb. I kept the carb tank and just got a cli float which had a lift pump on it, Accompanied with a 6bar inline external pump not forgeting the injection metal fuel filter. I've had no problems for 6 years now. I just replace the fuel filter annually. But saying that I'm quite curious how the mk3 works

On a mk3 injection tank there is only one pump and it fits inside the tank, there is actually a circular clip at the bottom of the tank and the pump with its housing and float clips onto so that clip and this prevent the entire setup from moving around in the tank whilst driving.

The pump and housing will fit in your carb tank but it lacks that clip so you need to find a way to prevent it from moving in the tank and you should be sorted, I have also heard of guys fitting the golf4 pump in a mk3 tank and because it a tight fit it does not move but then then had issues with the fuel gauge not giving correct readings etc.

Correct. Mk4 pump setup goes in but the fuel reading is out. There is no solution like the mk2 with a lift pump for mk3.
There is only two well working solutions. Change the tank to cli/ gti or build a big surge tank under the car, run a diapraghm pump to fill that out of the tank and run a external pressure pump fed from the surge tank.
Otherwise forever have failing pump and surge issue.

No need. Yo can retain the fuel lines in the car. Unless you are planning a 500hp turbo
