2011 polo 6r brown thick sludge in water bottle

Post by Zubz335 »

Hi guys,
I need some help regarding my current issue with my car, I have a 2011 polo 6r 1.6 comfort line auto
Today the temp light started flashing, so I pulled over to check the water level in the bottle, it looks alittle over filled so I waited for the car to cool down abit and opened it ever so slowly and this brown sludge started to come out, looked like melted chocolate, I immediately checked the oil and no milky substance at all, car moves fine, no smoke or loss of power etc.
My car has always had antifreeze in the cooling system and serviced regularly and I don't believe this to be rust and corrosion in the system because my coolant was always pink when I checked water levels in the mornings, but today I got a shock seeing this coming out. I understand that these models do not have an oil cooler, it looks like somehow oil has gotten into the cooling system, Im hoping it isn't the head gasket, can anybody provide me with what's going on?

Either headgasket or oil cooler that failed. If the temp went up I would say the damage is already done. That brown milkshake has probably been in the cooling system for a while and thus the cooling system cant work properly and therefore it starts to overheat. Good luck

Start by swopping the oil cooler/heat exchanger. Then for a few days keep washing that stuff out. Remember not to open the cap when the motor is hot. If it does not stop then you have a blown headgasket.

Thanks for the replies, my understanding with this models engine is that there isn't an engine oil cooler however it does have a transmission oil cooler which the cooling system runs through

If there is no heat exchanger then you very likely have a blown head gasket. Does that oil smell like engine or gearbox oil?

Abit hard to tell but it does seem like transmission oil, car is with mechanic, fingers crossed its not the heat gasket and just the tranny heat exchanger, thanks panic l, really appreciate it bud, I will post findings when I hear from him.

OK it definitely is the cooler as when we pressure tested the feed on the gearbox side of the cooler, reddish pink oil came out of the water return of the the cooler. So either a small crack inside or hole. If you Does anybody know of someone that can get me a good discount at vw, as I have to replace.

Yes bud, although mech said gearbox oil looked fine and no signs of water or moisture, rather be safe and get it done
