Help, MP9 AGY Motor timing

Post by Jasondj »

Hi all

My work daily needs some TLC. She is moaning a little when flooring her  From about 4000rpm till limiter :fear: (I don't drive to the limiter this was just a test) she pings. Under heavy load with a few of the people that i car pool going up hill its even worse.

I did some research and apparently its very common. I dug a little deeper and some theories say the timing needs to be advanced a little bit like 6deg because of the Unleaded/Lead Replacement fuel. Is this true? Another theory is the distributor/dizzy might be kicking the bucket and is not advancing the timing but i can feel when putting my foot down in second gear at 2500rpm the car getting a little more power at around 3500-4000 rpm, like when VTEC kicks in on a Honda :driving: (I know she ain't got VTEC, only description is could think of). I can feel when the timing gets advanced the dizzy is working but i can be wrong.

TDS was done when the cam belt was changed few month ago, she is actually doing this before the cam belt change.

Any help will be appreciated.

For pinging you need to RETARD the timing.nnot advance it.

Thats what i also thought with my little knowledge. Ping is pre detonation and timing should be retarted.

Will retarding the timing a little take away power? I know its only a 1.4 so not doing robot to robot racing but very conservative with fuel consumption less power = higher fuel consumption or am i wrong?

Well yes and no. While it is pinging it actually makes less power so it might actually pick up rather than lose.

Cool, car is booked in for tomorrow so will see how it goes.

As from a mechanic point of view, what should i tell them? Timing needs to be retarded or just say its pining?

Regular run of the mill mechi.

He is apparently very good and was recommended from a car club in Cape Town.

I can also recommend a tiler that did the job using the correct equipment but it doesn't mean the job will be done right

Ok so he is going to employba little bit of guesswork and younwill never know if it lost or gain power. Take him for a ride first and show him what it's doing.

Timing was at 16deg, brought it down to 6 and i was mooing like a cow, now power and then upped to 12 deg. Car feels the same on power but the pinging is gone!

Whilst standing there a guy came and asked if his Co's or Co2's(cant remember the correct phrasing used) can be set on his mp9 polo. I forgot to ask what it is so what is that he needed set?

16 degrees on idle at sea level?. are you sure you did the static lock to check timing with vcds correctly. IE did the rpm rise t 1500 and timing was stable?.
No you can't just set co on MP9. You need to piggyback chip it or need somebody that can modifiy and reflash a map.
