For cleaning and preparing the tappet cover I scrubbed it a bit with a brush and some cleaning agent "no name" brand.
Then into a home made soda blasting box and cleant it as much as possibly, sanded it done on the rough edges and cleaned again.

For the spray I used a canned spray that I got saw at Builders warehouse, not sure how good it is. Will post a picture of the brand this weekend.
The colour is a metallic aged copper.

Sorry bud, forgot to take a picture but the make is Rust-Oleum.
They have some very nice stuff, I'm sure there are a few guys that can give their opinion on this...

So I've started getting some things together, but before I start I want to get some advice.

I want to do some mods to the engine to get some extra performance out of it, now I know a lot of people say it's a waste of time modding this engine as you can just install a stock ABF and it already gives more power than a slightly worked KR. (not sure how true this is though, because I suppose each person has their definition of a "slightly worked" engine)

So I'm thinking of cams, head work, free-flow exhaust and balancing all the moving parts in the motor (crank, conrods, pistons, etc)

Cams: I've read that ABF cams open it up nicely and also that you can use two exhaust cams (not sure how that would work though)

Head work: Flowing and porting as a standard then looking into double valve springs or stronger valve springs

Exhaust: I am not to sure if a 4-2-1 or a 4-1 would be best... (I would love to have a Stainless steel exhaust!! )

Balancing: This is something that I just like getting done, honestly not sure how much extra it actually gives

Saw a knive edge crank available somewhere, I know they are a lot lighter but is it worth it?
I know the KR is not known for a lot of low end torque, so putting in one of these would definitely make it worse I suppose.

Any advice on the above would be highly appreciated

So it's been a while since things have happened and since I've had a chance to update...

Here it goes

Full suspension removed in front, best way to get the drop you want...just cut those coils


Cleant the calipers a bit to see how they look underneath all the grime, two laying next to each other for comparison they weren't that dirty.


Subframe removed now it needs to be cleant!! It is really dirty! I'm sure when cleaning it, it counts as weight reduction hahaha


No more suspension!

Battery tray looks really bad


Hope to get some more work done soon!

Doing the work and snapping pictures at the same time makes the work take longer but it is an opportunity for someone else to learn from what you have done.

Any updates or progress?

Unfortunately not as much as I would like to.

I will be back at home this weekend. Flights are booked and will back tomorrow night.

I did dismantle the whole heater box and still looking for the AC evaporator core.

I will post some pics this weekend. Motor is finally going in next week. The company where I want to send it had a bit of a back log and wanted to get some space in the shop first.

Managed to do a little bit of work this weekend. Unfortunately not much.

So I decided that due to the dash being out I want to give a go at repairing the heater box.

And so the disassembling started...


Here you can see the doors are not in the best of conditions...


Heater core doesn't look to bad, still considering a replacement though

And here is the AC evaporator which I am really struggling to find, it's becoming a real irritation


And then I started redoing the doors, still need to do some trimming then test fitting...












As soon as I am able to trim these and finalize the fitting I can then assemble the heater box, also I need to find that damn AC evaporator!!

Contact Smith's in Durban. They used to manufacture those fore VWSA and Toyota.

Alternatively try the aftermarket aircon guys like Crispair and DunRobin to see if they have a replacement that could work there.

You also need the expansion valve.

I wish I had lots of updates to give now but unfortunately the car mainly been standing as I've had some things to sort out.

But nonetheless I happy to say that at least there is some progress.

After much searching and looking parts I finally found a heater box with AC in tact that came from a Golf mk2.

It was in pretty decent shape and I would definitely be able to salvage most parts to fix my heater box and replace the AC condenser as well as some odds and ends.







So I set out on dismantling the heater box and cleant what ever I was going to install into mine.

I tried to take as many photos as I possibly could







Then I started test fitting all the doors and trimming the tape as needed to ensure a snug fit







And finally it is mainly assembled now. Just need to do some small parts and also try and find a new heater core. Unfortunately I checked with Goldwagen and none of the ones I phoned have stock. Mine heater doesn't seem to be in a bad condition but this was really a lot work and I'm not sure if I'd like to risk putting it in and then it decides to give up very soon.

I also managed to clean the carpets and refit them into the car. They really came out quite clean.
