KR is hard to find. Very few has squirters. The later polo on onwards bocks all have the front breather. You can go without the squirters.

So almost found a block this weekend :hurray: :hurray: :hurray:

Got in contact with a guy he sent me some photos as can seen below...but as things go sometimes, I got messed around and he never came round to meet up...I don't understand why you need lick some people's a#$@ to buy something they want to sell!! :mad: :mad: :bang: :bang:

Can anyone confirm if this is actually the correct thing, it does seem like it from a glance...

I don't know offhand of any other 1.8 blocks that had squirters, so that should be KR, yup.

Look at the engine number on the block. KRxxxxxx number will bestamped on it. xxxxxx denotes the actual number on the block.

I found another block, unfortunately the owner claims it has an 83mm bore which is quite a bit from std, I think it would be about 80 thou. I have never had an engine bored out that much, would you find KR pistons for that or would I have to use different ones?
Does anyone know if it would still be worth it?

83mm can still work.

You must negotiate a better price because he is costing you more money to build the engine.

Here's your options as I see them:

1. Build a short block 2.0l.
83mm is perfect for this. 2E or ADY crank and some suitable pistons and you would be Rock and Roll. I imagine 0.5 O/S ABF pistons could work as long as it had the right diameter gudgeon pin.
2. Build a 1.9l with your existing crank. Same as before just with different pistons to suit the shorter stroke. CA18 Nissan ones could be a possibility. Measure the gudgeon pin hieght vs stock KR pistons.
3. Sleeve the block back to 81mm. Stock internals for eternal happiness.

ABF O/S pistons are also very hard to find and costly. They also differ in compression height from the KR ones and gudgeon pin too. KR gudgeon pin is 20mm and ABF is 21mm.

9A pistons are 82,5mm standard size and would be able to get 60 thou (1mm) oversize and the gudgeon pin is also 20mm. Same compression height as KR piston afaik. ABF is 1,35mm(+_) longer compression height and will protrude on the short block. That is by using the 144mm rods and 86,4mm crank.

Remember when you go to 2L short block you will need to clearance the block at no 4 journal and oil pump and cut down the drive gear on the intermediate shaft to clear conrod no 4. You will also need pistons with a shorter compression height than the above ones mentioned.

I tried negotiating a price with this guy but he's not interested...looking for R 1500. I think that is really overpriced, unless I've lost it.

Thanks PapaJo, I appreciate all the help.

I am going to see if I can get some other leads on a different block, as this guy is a bit overpriced for what he is offering IMO, unless I'm wrong.

There are options for pistons in 83 mm. Bmw or nissan but crank caps is a non starter. To get others and to get it line bored will cost you a fortune.

So after much searching and fighting with some people on the way, I finally came right :troll:

Now I've got a block...or should I say motor :lol:

It was stripped, so I could look at most of the internals.
It's not in the best of conditions, needs some cleaning up, but it doesn't have a hole in it which is great!

Thanks for all the help along the way guys, it really makes a big difference.

So this is what it looked like when I went to pick it up. The pictures are a bit worse than it actually is...usually that's the other way around.
Very grateful for it though.

Looks like the pistons got burnt slightly, unless it's just carbon build up.

The sleeves don't look too appealing in the photo but they seem to be in good condition, measured with an electronic vernier. They come to just under 81mm, next step is to mic the sleeves at a few spots and see how it goes.
