Map sensor

Post by bhaphane123 »

Good day Everyone

I have been experiencing a problem with my car in relation to engine power. Its a VW Golf 1.4 Citi sport, fuel injection.
Firstly the take off speed of the car is just not the same, on inclines i experience engine power loss...i can hardly reach 140km/h with the car its even a problem trying to overtake,
and also the petrol consumption is just too much. Lastly wen i start the car in the morning there's a bit of white smoke that comes but then it stops.
So i was suspecting the Map sensor because the car is just not going anywhere, i don't know if i'm right tho...your help and views will be highly appreciated.

Get somebody experienced to have it checked out, if im not mistaken the citi sport is mpi, and u could be experiencing the dreaded mpi ecu issue. There are a few threads of the symptoms of a faulty mpi ecu, read through them and check if u have similar symptoms

Ah 2009 was the intro year of MPI. Have the timing set on a dyno for best power and get somebodybto scanit with vcds. If it tells you lambda sensor open or short circuit then I have bad news for you.

What would the lambda sensor open or short circuit mean Panic? I am also experiencing this issue on my 2009 Rox 1.4i

How does one go about working around the MPI issue?

Hi Panic / All,
I get the following Lambda DTC's on 2008 Tenaciti 1.4i
Does this also point in the faulty ECU direction or can this be resolved without replacing the ECU?
Also, where exactly is the o2 sensor and Lamda sensor located on the car?

Knock yourself out. It sits under the car. Most exhaust shops would be able to help you fit it chop chop. Clear the fault and see.

I have the same problem on a 2003 Golf mk4 with 1.6SR motor. Its lost mega power over the years can barely go uphill. Also changed MAP sensor and no fix.

Where is a good place to find aftermarket ECU and not break the bank?

Mk4 had a very different motronic unit and basically nothing related to the city issue will apply there.
On those start by replacing the lambda sensor and see that it receives power. Don't assume that what applies to one car does automatically to another.
This issue is MPI specific. Basically only found on the citi golfs.

There's no MAP sensor on a Mk4 1.6, just a MAF. Dicktator 60-2 or something similar will maybe be in the region of R6k fitted and tuned.

Original thread is 2 years old and the OP has not visited since.....
your car could have lost power for many other reasons than blaming the management. You could very likely put something else on and have the same exact issue. Have you ever scanned or had is scanned to see if it complains about something ?.

Yeah the last diagnostic I had done said MAF sensor and something about Catalytic convertor I think. I am going to have the CAT removed soon and see if that also helps. Im told they can cause performance issues over time but that remains to be factually confirmed.....

A dead maf sensor will certainly make it lazy. Yes cats can and do get blocked up over time specially if it was driven softly all it's life.
