Restoration: Mk2 2L 16V or CTI

Post by jkoorts »

Hi guys, brand new here.

I'm interested in doing a restoration project on a MK2 2L 16V or MK1 CTI.

Would it be possible to still get all the parts (bumpers, dashboards, switches, rubbers, etc) for these cars? And if so where?

Apologies if this was asked before, but the search engine would not allow a fine tuned search.

Thanks
jk

Definitely!

There are quite a lot of gents here who have spent the greater portion of the adult years restoring MK1's to their former glory.

Trawl through the build threads and you'll find where guys are sourcing their parts from.

It's a mix of finding things locally and of sourcing from abroad.

Good luck with your project!

There are some parts on mk2 that is impossible to find. Things like roof rail rubbers and fender skirts.

You can also check the Mk1 build register in my sig, alot of information has been shared in the various threads.

I haven't updated my resto project in a while although a lot has been done since the last post.

Not sure about the other threads.

To be fair it's more a cost thing. Loads of stuff can be bought, lots of good quality replacement parts also. Our crappy rand makes buying and bringing in stuff from outside terribly expensive.

Also remember CTi is south african only product. So unless it is engine related (which you can get most spares for anyway) you will not get cosmetic parts for it anywhere else in the world if you want to keep it original.

Because it's not a MkI.

Thanks for the replies. Yes I do want to keep it all original, except for the engine, nothing major just a 20% gain.

I'm leaning more towards the CTI. I don't like the MK2 dashboard. It rattles and gets dirty in places where you can't get it clean. Also the whole leather theme is old and tacky in today's standards in my opinion. I had a 2L 16V. MK1 more simple.

Now to find a CTI is another story. Most ppl on gumtree call their cars CTI when they've added the aftermarket stickers.

This guy's car looks legit though: https://www.gumtree.co.za/a-cars-bakkie ... 0913778809

Just the price tag..

If I have to settle for a junk CTI, I would like to be able to buy new seats and interior from top to bottom, which is why I started this thread to find out if EVERYTHING can be bought still. VW parts.

Good luck, I doubt that VWSA still has any new CitiGolf CTi parts but you never know.

They only have to keep parts 10 years after end of production. Already there are lots you won't get.

It will be cheaper to start off, with a better example. Your start price will be higher, but you will end up spending less money restoring one.
