Polo not starting after rear main seal replacement

Post by AndreBestbier »

Hey guys

I replaced the rear main seal on my 2007 VW Polo trendline and now struggling to get it to start.

It turns over but does not start. I took gearbox off again to check oil ring timing mark against TDC as i did not align them the first time....but stil no start.

Seal was leaking oil thats why i replaced it.

Some advise please. Thanks

Original part or pirate?

Heard of some bad quality pirates where the sensor in the seal doesn't read properly...

Its a Uniseal rear main seal without sensor. Bought at Masterparts.
I screwed the old sensor back on there seeing that the seal was only leaking and had no faulty sensor problems...

Oil ring hole was also aligned with the hole/mark on the housing while the crankshaft was on TDC....

What else am i missing or doing wrong?...

The new seal is probably not a pickup type seal..?

The oe seal is at a steal, u rather fit that with the new sensor as panic suggested

Sorry I put that wrong. The oil ring as u referred to is the pickup (a tin type of ring thats magnetic) and that should fit over the teflon seal thats built into the housing.

Did u buy the seal together with the pickup ring and the little plastic alignment goodie? Or did u just buy the seal?

If i remember correctly, the pickup steel ring must be a certain distance away from the crank sensor (I cant remember the exact distance, u can checkup on google) if the distance is too much or too less the signals will be interupted which could cause a no start condition. And thats the reason these seals must be bought together with the pickup ring.

When it comes to these cars I always only buy victor reinz as it comes in a set (seal, pickup, sensor) and it costs R1300. Another reason we suggested u buy the oem set that the guy posted.

Make sure not to damage the pickup when installing, it requires a tool to fit, but can be fitted with a mallet and some care..

Also note that the hole on the pickup does not line up with the hole on the seal housing, but with the little dimple on the left of the hole on the seal housing..

I bought the seal with housing and pickup ring and the plastic alignment ring...but with no sensor. I screwed on the old original vw sensor that i took off...

Installed it very carefully with no alignment tool and only with the plastic alignment ring and some screws while tightning it and making sure not to damage the seal. So thats fine.

You say that the hole on the pickup should NOT align with the hole on the seal housing?....because i aligned the two holes together. Found the same alignment and method on the internet....

What if i use the same pickup ring and sensor from the old vw seal that i took off and install that onto the new seal, and then make sure of the correct clearance between the ring and crank sensor? Will that make a difference? Will that be more compatible..

You can mess around for days trying to make that work or simply do it once by buying the right thing. These things are extremely finicky and instead of multiple times taking the box off while trying to save a couple of 100 bucks just seems silly to me.

Im sure u could use the old pickup ring again as long as its not bent and stuff..

And yes the holes MUST NOT be aligned together. The hole on the pickup ring must be about the 11 o clock position where u will see a small dimple on the rear main seal housing

If u look closely at the pic ex-dohctor posted, u will see a white mark on the seal housing around the 11 o clock position and below the white mark theres a small cut away. Thats the dimple im talking about

@OP panic is correct. If the pickup is a little of position the car will behave weirdly. Its very important for it to be in the correct position and u should buy a seal kit that comes with the alignment tool

Thanks guys for the advice.

Tried the old sensor and old oil pickup ring together, put them on the marks as said, and all working and starting fine again.

But i will definitely if i have to replace a rear main seal again spend more money and buy a complete original VW seal kit and do it right first time. Not worth the hassle lol.

Cheers

VR is an OEM supplier. So the item in the OE bag is made by them anyway.
