Sub assembly or re-work engine?

Post by Mark Schmuhl »

Hi guys , I have a citi golf 1.4 carb . She has been using a lot of oil and smoking too. She has also lost a bit of power. I believe it's the pistons and rings. Where can I get a sub assembly new? Labor is going to kill me on re-doing the engine so would prefer a sub assembly... Anywhere in Durbs? I'm trying to save where I can as this is Costly...

Usually this is the point where people just stick a 2l import motor in.

That is dirt cheap. Can't even buy the parts to fully rebuild it for that price.

What if I do the sub for now and leave the head when I have more bucks, would that stop the smoking?

I think doing the head at the same time will not add a significant amount to the total cost, assuming that its in reasonable condition now.

Without knowing exactly what is causing the smoking it is hard to commit to say it will stop the smoking. Head will smoke when you let it run against compression and then get on the throttle.

Contact Rino from Fastcar, he charged me very reasonable rates (labour) to freshen up my bottom end. I bought all the parts just for my own comfort of knowing exactly what was in my car. As a basis take note of the prices I paid to freshen up the bottom end.

Rings- R360 (Hastings chrome)
Bearings- R1200 (Kings racing bearing) NB. this will be a lot cheaper for you (R400-R800)
Labour- R1800 (strip bottom with engine in the car, re-ring, fit new bearings, re-assemble)
2000 Golf 1 Chico- CRANKCASE [Std 2.0 bottom end, head gas flowed, ported & chopped by Fastcar, 288 Estas Billet, 4-2-1 43mm Brospeed Branch, 50mm-57mm-63mm Exhaust] + THE PART (2B1 speacials) -Final power @ Autotrix 111wkw & 210wnm

2007 Velociti- WHITEWALKER [Std 2.0 bottom end, head gas flowed, ported, valve swirled, 276 Estas, 4-2-1 Branch, 57mm piping from front to back]

When running down hill and gear down it's ok and as soon as I exhilarate she starts smoking but not black smoke.

You take the head off and drop it at the engineering. Askt hem to tell you what it needs - get the parts from goldwagen, let them fit it and put it back on.
