Golf MK3 intermitently doesnt start / cuts out

Post by Just_Ice »

Hi all,

Perhaps someone will hit the bulls eye before I take it in to be seen to.

For the past few months or so, every once in 2-3 weeks my car will either:
1. Cut out will driving - This has typically happened while doing +-60kph, and will either be a very quick and sudden cut off and jump start itself (as it is in gear) and all i will feel is a big jerk, see the rev needle drop momentarily and the engine/oil lights come on as they usually would just before you start the car. It has also happened where it will cut-off as I am changing gear and me releasing the clutch will just jump start it as if nothing happened. It happens once in a while.

2. In addition to the above, I also have the odd occasion where if I try starting the car, the engine will turn but not take. After a few attempts (sometimes 4/5 tries, other times a 10 minute wait) it will start up without issue and all is good again.

I assume that the two above issues are related? Any ideas? :bang:

How would one go about testing that? And if it is failing, can that part be replaced or would I be better of getting a new distributor?

Can't really test it if it is that intermittend.
Cheaper to just get a distributor at goldwagen.

The guys above are correct, the distributor has seen better days.

On the carb models the dist was common and on the injection units the terminal 30 voltage supply relay was the cause. Remove relay open and solder the points again and see. It is a no30 relay if it fuel injection.
