Mk1 LTD EDT Engine leaked all oil.

Post by Nevza »

Howsit guys I have a 2010 mk1 few days ago my clutch started slipping , I noticed oil under the car seems to be coming from the engine as it was all over the sump etc, then while driving to a petrol station my oil warning lamp came on I stopped at the garage and there was oil all over the floor and a trial following me. And there also seems to be some oil near the throttle body, is that normal? I have a cone so there's no oil in the air box. I'd also like to mention there has been a small new tapping noise around the engine I cant say if it's in or around the engine. The car has 73 000km. Please help before I get ripped off this is my 4th golf one and the 1st time experiencing all of this.

Assists you in separating sentences and also makes it easier for other to read.

How long ago was any work done to the car?
When last was it serviced?

Could be the sump bolt has come loose and its leaking oil from there, could be rear main seal seeing you mention a slipping clutch.

Oil light and buzzer came on because oil level dropped below the pickup level of the oil pump.

What is the oil level like?

How small is the tapping noise? Small like a broken conrod flailing around after making a hole in the block or small like a lifter.
Did the tapping start before, after or the same time as the oil loss event.

My MkI has none of these issues after 35 years and 167k km's  I would get the car up on a lift or axle stands, clean off as much of the oil and then inspect everything for any obvious leaks. The noises are hard to diagnose so you may need to get an experienced person involved...

Car was last serviced at about 63000km. The tapping is extremely light it could be hydraulic lifters. It started along the same time as the leak.

No engine work has been done I'm the second owner and records show regular service where done.

There is currently no oil in the car as it split it all out I then drove back home which was about 3km and it was rattling like crazy(probably since there was no oil in the motor).

I kept thinking the oil filter was leaking and was planning to get it serviced this weekend.

I'd also like to know if it's normal for it to have some oil near the throttle body?

If you drove it with no oil, it's engine rebuild time. You're lucky the camshaft didn't seize and strip teeth off of the belt/bend valves.

I think the knocking you heard was a conrod...

No other way that the motor can be empty of oil without a) a missing sump plug, b) a hole in the block somewhere

Not entirely true, a leak from a pressurised container like the oil filter or heat exchanger will empty it pretty quickly.

You can pretty much be guaranteed that you are in for a full rebuild.
You have literally killed that motor.

Crap, just called Barons DBN they say a complete sub assembly is 5200 (the same amount of coilovers i was getting monthend) including sump and oil pump etc.

Is that a good deal or should I rebuild? I really want to keep it stock standard.

dirt cheap. Grab it wit both hands. forget coilovers. What use is a car with no engine sitting on coilovers?.

So, to recap. You saw oil leaking from car, drove to petrol station oil warning light came on, the without topping up oil, you drove home with little to no oil in car????

There seems to be another problem here (other than the oil issue) ......

Thanks for the feed back its clear that even if the problem was small I've probably messed up the motor by driving it after all the oil was out.

I just checked the dipstick and there's a little bit of oil in the motor just at the tip. To be safe I'm buying the sub assembly if the old one can be rescued I'll sell that and make a buck.

He says that there is a bit of oil left on he dipstick so surely he is only about a ltr short of oil would that be enough to run a motor dry?
