2008 citi sport 1.4i rev hang + odd idle
Hi guys,
First time posting here. I usually just search threads as a guest but can't quite find the answer I need so hope I can get help here
I have a 2008 citi sport 1.4i, 75k on the clock with no mods at all for now. Bought the car recently and the only issue I have is that the revs seem to hang or even go up by about 500rpm every time I change gears. I just did a big service on it. Changed Cambelt and tensioner , filters, and plugs but the problem is still there. The idling is not settled either. It searches slightly between about 900 and 1000rpm. It never just idles constantly. And if I'm engine braking and push the clutch in the revs will sometimes drop to about 500rpm and then bounce back above 1k rpm before getting back to its usually twitchy idle.
We ran a diag. No faults. Did a throttle adaptation but problem is still there . Cleaned the inlet to the throttle body as it was a bit gunky but haven't done anything further.
Is this a common issue, does one need a pi innovo specialist to reset the ecu or can it be mechanical?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

Have you checked for any vacuum leaks on the whole intake system?

Hi, try cleaning a throttle body and do an adaptation first.

Did they put the timing in correctly when they changed the belt?

Re: 2008 citi sport 1.4i rev hang + odd idle
From the OP's first post it seems that the problem was already there before the belt change.chucker02 wrote:Did they put the timing in correctly when they changed the belt?

-Check timing
-Clean Throttlebody
-Align Throttlebody
That sound like a timing issue to me. Or get someone with a vag.com cable and check for error codes.
Had the same issues on my MP9 ended up being TB align and set timing on a dyno, worked perfectly, car runs like a champ.
If I am correct your motor is the MPI and not MP9?

Sounds like a vacuum leak to me. Also check the large fuses next to the battery, and clean your earth points with a cloth and some petrol (don't use sand paper to "clean").
If that fails, I'd say go over timing, and check the engine temp via VCDS.

Re: 2008 citi sport 1.4i rev hang + odd idle
Hi Guys
I have a stock standard 2007 Citi Golf 1.4i with the same symptoms. Some additional points are:
1) Very sluggish between 1000 and 2000 rpm's. I can literally floor it and nothing happens. But when you get to about 2500 rpm's it reacts like normal.
2) When applying little throttle like in stop start traffic, the car starts to jerk and you can hear the drivetrain picking up the slack and slamming together (hope you guys can understand that) repeatedly until you release the throttle and press in the clutch.
I have changed the sparkplugs and fuel filter, so I think that it isn't fuel related but rather the air ratio or something. I also did a diagnostics test and it showed no errors.I'm not an expert and haven't done anything to the throttle body or surrounding components.
Hopefully you can point me in the right direction.

Re: 2008 citi sport 1.4i rev hang + odd idle
My 2008 1.6i also drops to 500 - 750 rpm.. cleaned up everything can it be a timing issue?
