MK1 Gti - Oil pressure light

Post by golf4ever »

Hi Guys,

Just got my MK1 Gti. I noticed it starts fine but sometimes the engine light comes on. I can also hear a winning sound coming from the dash.

Any ideas in what the problem could be?

Hi
It could just be the oil pressure switch on the oil filter housing. However if the engine sounds rowdy it could be the oil pressure. And often a new oil pump might solve it if the main bearings are not worn.

I think he is talking about the oil pressure light.
Best thing to do is a oil pressure test before driving any further.

I remember having the same hassle on my MK2 GTI and after testing the oil pressure SAC replaced the instrument cluster as the reckoned its a common fault and not repairable.
As I had a motor plan with SAC at the time I just swallowed the story and 2 hours later my problem was sorted.

Yes, I am talking about the oil pressure light. Pic below.

Thanks for all the advice. I am a bit of a newbie, but am determined to work on this car by myself. Have to learn.

Please see the pic below. Have I marked the low and high pressure sensors correctly?

Not sure about the yellow wire though, Any ideas. Pic below.

Then that would be your high pressure sensor. They arent expensive and quiet easy to change. Goldwagen has them for about R100 I think. Change that and see if goes away. If not then you would defintly need to check the oil pressure. I had the same issue but my problem was actually that the wiring was incorrect.

A original GTI should have a oil pressure gauge. What is the reading on the gauge when the light comes on?

Hi Guys,

Replaced the oil pressure sensor (high pressure - white one) today.

Initially oil pressure light was off, but buzzer was still going closer to 3000rpm.

Am a bit confused, see the pics below at start and whilst driving.

The high pressure circuit is part of the guage sender unit on the side of the head. Check the wiring perhaps?

Check that your wiring is correct. I also expreienced the same problem and it turned out to be my wiring that was incorrectly connected.

I had the same problem and it was my big-ends. One bearing was loosing a lot of oil pressure from there. Check you mains and big-ends. Thanks

Things to check (perhaps swop out a loan unit):
1. Wiring;
2. Oil-pressure sender unit;
3. Instrument cluster, especially the connectors for bad/corroded connections;

If still no luck I'd go with a tired oil pump as the most likely culprit.

1st rule is: "DO NOT continue to drive the car under these circumstances"
2nd rule is: Refer to rule no. #1

There are plenty of threads that you can search online to see how to check the oil pressure sensor(s) and wiring.
The fact that yours comes on AND starts buzzing after 2000rpm indicates the oil pressure switch on the side of the head.

If this switch is fine as well as the wiring then the culprit is most certainly your oil pump. The question is not if the engine will seize but rather WHEN.
