mk1 golf 85 1600 carb not idleing

Post by rabbit'85 »

hi ive recently joined the forum because I have a series of questions that I cannot find anywhere. I have a mk1 golf 85 1600 carb that im busy converting to euro rabbit. last nite the car was fine concerning engine, after I came from work my gf picked me up in my car, when I got in and started, the car would refuse to idle. it starts and everything as long as I keep the revs up. but dies once I let go off accelerator pedal. any thoughts?

If you pull the choke does it make any difference?

Manually pull it on the carb, Not sure how cause I've never owned a carb motor but it should be simple.

I had the same problem on a 99 Chico 1.6
In the end got a Goldwagen "pirate" carb and slapped it on (well I got the workshop up the road to do it)
R2000 later all in and she runs like a dream, even starting better :)

Does the carb come with an fuel cut-off solenoid - if it does make sure the solenoid opens when you switch the ignition on. You should hear it click...

Some advice I got when I had a few random carb issues...
  • Remove carb from engine
    Throw carb away
    Buy FI parts
    Install FI parts
    Tune
Anyway, does it not idle when hot and cold? Or either or? As Torker suggests, check the cut off solenoid and go from there...

P.S. Euro Rabbit?

The solenoid is fine. I hear the click. Car starts no problem just 1 swing then it take but dies if I do not keep my foot on acc pedal. Sum1 suggested that I should check the throttle response as well as the air/fuel mixture. He sed it could be adjusted on the carb by some kinda pins. Is it worth checking it out.

Check the idle and mixture screws if the cut off solenoid is fine, I can't remember what the settings are, they will differ from engine to engine...

I would rather get the stock settings, leave engine off, set the carb on the stock settings, start engine and adjust from there...

P.S. Alrighty then  I have not seen a lot of Rabbits in SA, one cabriolet a few years back and there was a guy rebuilding one on this forum a while back...

I would start with Google, else check some where like here...

A Haynes manual might have it as well, I know GaVeN on this forum has a book that has all the settings that we use when we service my MkI Golf.

idling jet (solenoid) Is usually the culprit. Have you checked for a leak on the base plate? Take some Carb cleaner and spray it along the base of the carb while car is running... if the revs drop then replace the base plate.

Rather go aftermarket, Doing my mp9 now... and found out to late that aftermarket would have been better for future... mp9 is expensive in Namibia.

First off nice ride, rabbit looks awesome so do it and post a lot of pics  .

Aftermarket like gotech, dictator and so on engine managment systems.

Can't remember the stock carb that well but the cut-off solinoid should get its power from the coil, so you can unplug it and plug back to hear if it switches while ignition is on.

Could also be dirt in carb. You can remove filter pipes from carb, rev it a little then put your hand on the carb and take it off as the engine is about to die.

Think you can get a carb kit with correct jets from goldwagen,if you want to clean and get carb back to stock.

Stupid question but did you check that the air filter is still good?

last time i thought my idling jet went turned out to be the coil not giving enough power. plugged up the solenoid directly to the battery just to get her home
