Volvo needs a service and usually uses Edge 10W60, I like Shell oils so if they have a 10W60 Shell then would be keen to try it

Re: Which oil to use?
Hey Castrol have been around for ages, can it really be that bad? My brother uses the silver bottle (Shell Helix Ultra F/S 5W40) in his C63. My brother an I have standardised on Shell Helix Ultra F/S 5W40 on our cars

Re: Which oil to use?
You won't believe the crud that I've seen in engines which run Castrol. Even my 1.4i Citi's sump was disgusting after 120 000kms using VW dealership Castrol oil. I immediately switched over to Shell after the 120 000km warranty expired and the engine was squeeky clean and golden when I opened it again on 240 000kms. The expensive Castrol is pretty much on par with the other top brands, but in the lower spectrum Castrol is pretty poor from what I've seen.
My cousin builds drag motors, racecar engines etc, and he says he had lots of foaming issues with Castrol and only uses Shell - his problems are solved with regards to foaming and loss of oil pressure when things get really hot in the engine.

Re: Which oil to use?
I'd guess that it's probably good stuff. But I won't ever use any Castrol oil ever again, not even in my lawnmower. The only reason VWSA uses Castrol is because of marketing and kickbacks - not because it is the best oil for your VW.Jennifer_a wrote:I guess as with everything you get what you pay for. Re: Which oil to use?
I agree, I also prefer Shell. Yes unfortunately corruption and politics have infested every sector in our country. Its sad that even agents won't put oil in your car which is best for the engine, morals and ethics is something from the distant past, everything is about money now.
Even at Mercedes we wanted to buy Mobil one which they recommended we top up with in the begining now they say they do not sell it anymore and it has been replaced with non F/S "Mercedes oil" because F/S is too expensive so obviously they also do not use F/S anymore when servicing your vehicle, we have now taken over / assumed responsibility of servicing the C and use Shell Helix Ultra F/S

Buy the best oil you can but shop around for prices.
My R5 demands 505.01 so I use Helix HX7 AV 5w-30.
Goldwagen wants R185/liter.
I got it from Buffalo Lubricants across the street for R84/liter.

Re: Which oil to use?
Incorrect parts supply happens all the time, a while ago I ordered a clutch switch for my Golf 4 GTI and unknowingly received a brake switch (should have removed the clutch switch first so I knew what it looks like), when over the weekend I wanted to install the clutch swith I found it was a brake switch

Re: Which oil to use?
That switch I can understand. Not many people know what a Golf 4 clutch switch looks like. But a golf oil filter must be the single most popular item sold by any parts shop.Jennifer_a wrote:Incorrect parts supply happens all the time, a while ago I ordered a clutch switch for my Golf 4 GTI and unknowingly received a brake switch (should have removed the clutch switch first so I knew what it looks like), when over the weekend I wanted to install the clutch swith I found it was a brake switch

I agree in todays world with part numbers and IT systems faults like this should not happen but it seems no system is 100% lol
