Engine Jerks

Post by Roxsta »

Howzit People...

This is my first time here so please bare with me.

I have a 2006 Polo 1.6i Comfortline. I seem to be having a problem with it.

When I start or switch off the vehicle the car jerks violently(engine mainly) and when the car is at idle it gives of an irregular jerk.
I've done a full service on the car as well as cleaned the throttle body intake.

Can someone please assist me as to what I should try to do to resolve this issue. Help much appreciated...

You say you have done a full service, but did you check your plugleads, and dizzy? If either one of these is faulty you can have the problems described.

If all those check out, and sparkplugs is gapped properly like they should be, you might want to consider taking the car to someone who can plug in a diagnostics computer. It can be a host of electrical problems as well, e.g a dirty TPS or something like that.

Hope you get it sorted!!

Jerks, as in shakes?

If so I would check the dogbone/lower gearbox mount and top gearbox mount under the battery as they tend to wear out after a few years.

Common problem on these motors is the plug leads.
They build up a corrosion on the plug side.
Build your car for yourself, not what an internet forum tells you.

Howzit Guys,

@ JakesN..

I have not checked plug leads nor dizzy.... What am i expected to check in the dizzy and plug leads?
I have put 2x new sets of spark plugs though and the problem is still there....
I have vcds and vas pc which i did connect the car too and does not come up with any faults.

@ 1.9TurboVw...

Yeah jerk as in shakes....
Lower gearbox mounting and top gearbox mounting underneath the battery have both been replaced and yeah they were worn out... Felt a difference there though the violent jerking is still there when starting and turning off the engine...

@ Duck...

To the naked eye the plug leads at the plug side seem to be good... no corrosion what so ever...
Any suggetions as to what plug leads i should look at when replacing them?

By checking plug leads it basically just means to look out for corrosion and maybe ask someone to check the resistance. If a plug lead is damaged in the sleeve somewehere, you might not see it, but a simple resistance check on a multi-meter should help. And dizzy depends on what one you have on, if it is the older type one with cap and rotor check for cracks or burn marks. Newer type ones needs to be checked by the agents.

Noted about plugs, but did you gap them properly? A lot of sales agents tell you that plugs are ready gapped, but it never seems to be the case. No harm in checking the proper gaps.

And as for what type of plug leads, I found the Echlin or Bougicord plug leads to work best on my cars. My set of Bougicord leads on my Jetta is almost 10 years old now.

At least it is a good sign that the pc did not show any problems.

Hope you get the jerks sorted

Hi Jakes,

Plugs have been changed by a VW Technician(buddy of mine whom is no more around)

Agents are a bunch of rip offs thats why i seek help elsewhere....lolz

I will def get a set of Bougicord plug leads and try them out...

Yeah VCDS helps... plugged it in yesterday and came up with radio/speakers error only.

I hope so too it gets sorted cos its def annoying...

Thanks for your feedback... will try them out and let you know the outcome...

Howzit Guys....

So after doing a Throttle Body Adaptation, the car still has that fish bite feel to it and its really annoying now...
Though there is still a kick back when im increasing speed and when im in traffic and in first gear.... like the car is being starved or something... I have to give it extra gas for it too move and not give that kick back and jerk.

Any ideas what it could be? Help needed big time please....

Did you check you plug leads and when last did you service the car?

Hi there
My first time on the forum. My 2004 1.6 comfort line is having the same problems. It is very jerky, and has become progerssively worse over the last month. I have changed the coil, replaced the plugs and cables, as well as the air filter. She idles hard, in that the whole car shakes when she idles. She also rides like she is out of gear and then it's as if something then finally takes and she will "wake up" but for a short while. If I accelerate slowly she doesn't jerk as much, but going above 80km she does not like. She is also a bit noisy. No smoke though so that is at least a good sign. Any advice would be appreciated. I have been told that it is the fuel pump? What do you think it could be.

check compression. Have the injectors tested.
you can test fuel pressure to see if the pump is Ok.
also be aware that there are two different fuel filters available for them and the incorrect pressure one could have been used.
