CiTi Golf Thermostat Issues
Hi
I replaced my 1.4i CiTi Golf's thermostat @ 120k kms.@ 160K my temp started dropping again when driving, but gets to normal temp when i stand @ a robot for a while.
I again replaced the thermostat about 2 weeks back with one that i bought from Goldwagen.I put the new thermostat in & the car's temp still stays @ a quarter when driving & gets to normal temp when standing @ a robot etc for a while.
Could the new thermostat be an out of box faulty unit or could it be the temp sensor causing this problem?

Re: CiTi Golf Thermostat Issues
Some things are better replaced with OEM, thermostat and expansion bottle cap included. I've been stuffed around endlessly by non-franchised parts, sometimes the difference in price is as little as R10, I pay the premium for something that is designed to work as it should.Herschel wrote:Hi

Re: CiTi Golf Thermostat Issues
It is more than likely your temperature sensor. I bought a thermostat from GW, and had no issues whatsoever with it. You should be able to check it. If your temp gauge shows 1/4, after a decent drive, feel the two pipes of your radiator. If the one is a lot cooler than the other one, it is most likely thermostat. (don't burn yourself feeling the pipes) But my money is on temperature sensor. They're under R100 at GW Delarey, and they're decent quality. Been running mine for over a year now without issues. Re: CiTi Golf Thermostat Issues
I've got the exact same issue, replaced my thermostat on the 1.4 with a Meyle part, (87 degree) and the temperature gauge still stays on between quarter and half, as far as I know it should read half on the citi golfs? Fan still comes on as per normal but gauge never reaches half. Next thing to replace is the sensor.

Re: CiTi Golf Thermostat Issues
Please be careful. We (GW) list about 6 different thermostats for the mk1/2/3 and polo range. The correct part number for your car is A034- with the correct heat range. You can pm the part number they supplied you and I will check what it is.
How old is the water pump? If it's corroded where the thermostat seats , it is possible that the water bypass it.

Re: CiTi Golf Thermostat Issues
Btw Wahler is a oe brand . When you buy from vw, that is the same brand you would find in the box. So there is nothing wrong with the brand quality. But it is possible that a new part is faulty even if it is OE.

Re: CiTi Golf Thermostat Issues
The number given translate to a 80 deg thermostat. I will need to double check this tomorrow morning. This can be your problem

Re: CiTi Golf Thermostat Issues
You should have the 87*C thermostat.
If you sit in traffic your gauge should go to normal before the fan comes on at 92*C otherwise you have a cold fan switch too... Or of course your temp sensor is wonky

The fan comes on as per normal when the guage is half as it should be when it's standing,so that is working fine.I just think i was supplied the incorrect temp thermostat.

part number A3110 80deg Wahler R110.00
part number A034- 87deg wahler R121.00
7deg difference is about a 1/4 gauge.
Let me know if there is anything else you want to know regarding this

Re: CiTi Golf Thermostat Issues
Interesting when reading this info how different manufacturers have different operating temp.
Nissans thermostats open in the early 80C.
I put in a thermo fan on the datsun and found a temp sensor from a pulsar.
Switch will turn on fans at 88 and off again at 84/85.
Just another note. When I looked through the catalogue I saw Pergeot is one of the manufacturers with the coldest engines.
Was something in the 70s range that the fan switched on and off.

Re: Jetta 3 - 1.6 CSl
Hi Gents
Please help me I got a Jetta 3 CSL carb my heat gauge go's up to half and stays there where I am on highway or city driven fan kicks in and out if in traffic.
My question is it normal for the heat gauge to stay at half once temperature is reached as I was told to remove my thermostat then it will run cooler is it advisable to drive without thermostat
Please help

Re: CiTi Golf Thermostat Issues
Half is where it should sit and stay. You cannot remove a thermostat in those engines as they will then overheat. Anybody that advises you to do that is an idiot and you should not follow any advise given by him again. There are many cars where you can remove a thermostat but that vw is not one of them. Anyway you want engines to run fairly hot - it is healthier for them than running too cold. Water formed by condensation evaporates from the oil when it runs close to 100 degress where it does not if it runs too cold - thus causing sludge and acids.
Also there is more wear on cold engines and they are heavier on fuel.
