So generally speaking, the way forward is:

a)replace bast plate
b)get carb rebuilt
c)get it tuned properly with CO machine.

Ok thanks for the advice guys. I really appreciate the input.

Oh, the mechie told me that i should get a orig VW part (best) but costs R700+ or the next best is a Febi one (+-R200), he said the cheaper ones are just kak.

Febi are fine. They last for a long time especially if the air box is properly secured. If you have the kombi air intake, lose it and put the stock one back, it helps support the carb.

There should be a triangle bracket from two studs on the tappet cover side and then the top for the nut and rubber on the air box.

Ola guys has this problem been sorted? I'm having the same prob with my Jetta clx, but i have noticed on mine she starts her dance when the fan goes on for the second time as soon as it goes off then she is fine again until it goes on again could it be my alternator trying to tell me something? :violin:

Your symptoms sound power related rather than air leak related on the carb or carb base.

You will only know once you have taken your car to a place where they can test the alternator and check the charge voltage and current. You can also check your power and earth cables for proper and clean connections as this can also cause an increase in current draw and drop in voltage on the power circuits.

Is it 300RPM or typing error, 3000RPM??
Did you connect all the vacuum pipes up at the same places where you took them off? Check that the 2nd stage on the carb opens up on vacuum. Did you check the crank timing on the flywheel side or on the front pulley mark? Use the flywheel TDC mark (there is a 0 mark next to it also that gives you the 6 degrees timing mark) and check that cam timing is not 180 degrees out. No:1 on the cap should be with rotor just past the mark on the face of the distributor casing.

OK so this is a really old post, but I want to avoid this issue once weather gets better. I have eliminated everything and am down to the coil. Will this cause any of the issues i have experienced? I did notice during the summer months that it gets mad hot, too hot to even touch at times, is this normal?

Could also be heat transfer from exhaust manifold radiating heat onto the coil. How is it fitted in the engine bay? Picture if you can. Try moving it more to the left side of the car on the firewall to get away from exhaust manifold heat radiation.

If im facing engine bay, its mounted on firewall, more right than in middle of firewall. but heat transfer could be possible. Will take a pic shortly

Turn that coil around that the plug wire faces the other direction.

The base plate you fiited, is it a rubber and steel one or all metal?

I know some guys used a solid unit thinking it won't crack again, but this causes the fuel in the float chambers to "percolate" or vaporize and cause idling and starting issues. Seems you have tried everything else hehehehe

Also found on my nephews car recently , the black wire from the carburetor to the tappet cover screw was not making contact, and the thin vacuum hose at the back of the carb goes to the vacuum advance on the distributor , then Mack sure no cracks are on the dizzy cap and rotor.

ok so im almost certain that its related to the coil. y i say this is cos i ran into my issue again on saturday, pulled over and threw some water over the coil a few times, like a 2l, and issue was immediately gone. so problem has to do with heat building up in coil. anyone ever had this?
