Rebuilding a 1980 Golf L 1100 motor

Post by marnus »

Need some advance and tips regarding the above topic. My mk1 overheated over the weekend, becuase of 2 radiator pipes that bursted. Stopped immediately, fitted new pipes. Drove about 3 km home when the car started smoking white (white smoke). The oil pressure dropped alot lets sayon idle from 2-3 bar to 1 bar. There is also oil leaking from the geadgasket. Im guessing new headgasket and rings. This will be a great learning experience for me if I can rebuild the motor myself. I have a haynes manual. How difficult is it to rebuild a 1100 motor.

Do i need to sent the head to an ingineering company
What do i replace pistons, rings, All the gaskets on the motor?
Does the head need honing?

Would like to do it myself. This is also a great opportunity to get the engine bay neat. Any help and tips will be appreciated

There might be certain spares which can be a challenge though. For instance big end and main bearings.

Yes Panic that is the problem. Vw, Goldwagen and other spares places no luck on the bearings and rings. Luckaly I found a place that have old the parts still in stock. Think i must buy spare for future use.

You could try VW Heritage Parts or Crazy Quiffe, both in the UK and have a ton of OEM and Repro MkI Golf parts. Also get yourself on the UK MkI Owners Club forum, I am a member of the Club and Forum, a wealth of information...

Is it a easy job if you know your way with spanners and torque wrench, but dammit torque wrenches is expensive. Think the manual will help a lot.
