2L 8v Digifant Issues

Post by Dub Addiction »

Hi Guys,

I am currently having issues with our 96' Mk3 Golf GTI. The problem is, whenever you are driving, whether the car is hot or cold, it tends to buck/jerk at any speed, gear or time. I've taken the car to 3 different mechanics already who all recommended that it be changed to mp9 and that the digifant system is faulty. Could this be true? The car feels under powered, smokes when accelerating over 3500rpm and randomly jerks while driving and if you put the clutch in while driving, it would switch off and have to be started again, but doesn't always switch off.

I've changed the coil pack, spark plug leads, serviced it, fuel pump replaced, water pump and mountings and still no improvements :bang: .The motor is currently on 305 000 km and hasn't been opened once, if that helps.

I had a very similar problem when I had my mk2 with the same motor. Turned out to be a broken valve spring. So before going nuts on the management make sure you have things checked out on the mechanical side.IE. do a compression test and check the simple stuff like spark plugs and plug leads.

Spark lugs and leads were replaced in attempt to resolve the problem. The compression test was done before, not sure what the figures were but the mechanic never said anything about it being incorrect. Checked for vacuum leaks and that was fine. Replaced the airflow meter as well and it drove right for a day and then went back to it's tricks, plus the fuel consumption is worse than my VR6.

Ok there is a relay numbered 35 or 36 in the fuse box. That supplies the management. Either replace or test it and see if it's working. If that dies it steals power from other places and sometimes does what you are seeing.

For jerking - Remove the throttle position sensor plug and see how it drives.

For the smoke - Water temperature sender and relay 30 must be replaced. Got them from GW.

my golf did more/less the same thing, check the following link.

@Jet Li: I haven't gotten a chance to check the relay and temp sender yet, will test relay 30 and 35/36, as panic mentioned and see if it resolves the issue.
