Caddy 1.6 carb engine dying/cutting off

Post by Life937 »

Hi All,

Need some help with my Caddy, it is a 2007 model with a HM 1.6 carb engine. It has the new spec Citi dash Engine and has the following mods, 272 Estas Cam, Wildcat branch and freeflow. Engine currently has approximately 94000kms so it is still pretty fresh.

Car was serviced by myself around 90 000km where I replaced the engine oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter and also cleaned the carb with the normal carb cleaner can from Midas. Car has been running smoothly up until this past weekend.

Whilst driving and when the engine is up to temperature the engine cuts out. No jerking or misfiring, just total cut out. It is almost as if I have switched the ignition off. This happened a few times whilst driving over the weekend and yesterday I eventually got stuck with the car. This was during peak bumper to bumper traffic and travelling at snails pace. The outside temp was also pretty high. Whilst idling the engine just died. So I tried starting the engine and it swings over, starts and dies immediately after that. After trying a few times, I pulled over and had a quick look. The fuel filter had fuel in it so I ruled out any fueling issues. I was alone so could not check spark. Opened up the carb air filter housing to check if there were any visible blockages and all clear. Eventually called a buddy and got towed home. Fortunately home was only about 1km away. Went back home and tried starting her and she started on the turn. Revved the engine and it revved cleanly up to 4500 rpm. Tried again this morning and once again no issue, started and idled fine as normal during a cold start up.

Some history on the car:

I previously had a problem with the ignition coil and replaced that with a BERU one from Goldwagen. this resolved the issue the first time. When having this problem again after some time, I purchased another one and when replaced, it did not make any difference. Car returned back to normal after poring some petrol down the carb and starting with Wide open throttle. This seems to be an intermittent problem that only surfaces when it is really hot. I am going to try my spare coil this evening and see if there is any difference, but have been running out of ideas.

PS. The ignition coil is the 3pin version like the fuel injected Citi's. The distributor is also the same as the fuel injected Citi's

Any other suggestions/ideas, any all help is appreciated. I am based in Midrand

I was going to say its the coil farking out again so just try out your other one.

Had this same experience before, car starts when cold, warms up then cuts out - cools down and starts again.
Have you had your bottle of Hatorade today?

Hi, finally got myself registered..

Life937, try replacing your fuel pump, I have a 2008 registered caddy and also experienced the same problem not so long ago +/- 98000kms. replaced the fuel pump and all is fine now.

bypass the fuel resevoir that fits between the carb and pump, send the fuel direct from pump to carb and see if the problem goes away, if it does then change that resevoir

Thanks guys, please make me understand something. If it is a fuel starvation issue (pump/reservoir) why does it just cut out? Surely it would sputter due to insufficient fuel? the problem is also intermittent, not always when the car is warm but some strange circumstances leading to the cut out.

I will none the less look at replacing the fuel pump and the coil since I do have some new spare items at home

could be spark related but you will need to test for spark when it does occur

Managed to replace the coil with a Goldwagen BERU and the fuel pump with a Goldwagen WAG version last night. Started up and drove it around for a short while and all seems well. The fan even operated a few times so I am sure that it was up to normal temps. I decided to not use the Caddy to work and back in fear of getting stuck again so I used the Golf instead. I might use it tomorrow and will then report back.
