More cooling issues with my car!

Post by Tander »

Howzit guys,

So, I replaced the Water pump and cam-belt this weekend on the car as the WP had failed. Refilled the cooling system with 2L of anti freeze and rest water.

Since Saturday, no issues what so ever.

All of today, she has been fine in this stupidly hot whether. However, just a few mins ago, while waiting in a queue, I noticed the temp gauge started to climb very slowly passed the 1/2 mark - no steam or anything coming from the engine either. So, I went to park and let her cool for a few mins.

What I have noticed - the fan seems to have stopped coming on.
I replaced this fan last year - so i don't think it's that.
I also opened the bonnet to check for leaks and to check coolant level - no leaks and coolant level is fine.

How can I check the fan?
Could it be a switch / fuse?

Thanks all.

Could be a fuse, relay or fan motor?

Jump the wires on the temp sender unit in the radiator. If fan does not come on then either it's a fuse or the fan or the fan control unit. If it comes on then either you have an airlock, or failed thermostat or failed thermo swithc. Feel the radiotor down the side. If it is cold at the bottom with the engine hot the airlock or thermostat stuck.

Thanks Panic,

I'll go take a quick look with the airlock as I suspect it might just be that since I did drain all the water out of the system on Saturday and refilled.

How do I jump the wires on the temp sensor unit? And where is it located exactly?

Thanks once again

Just checked now, all sides of the radiator, including the top on bottom hoses on the right of the radiator (by battery) are all very hot - so it seems like water is going through - but something is not allowing the fan to come on.

Is the temp sensor wire on the inlet hose at the top of the radiator?

Okay, I have found the switch down the side of the radiator. Seems like a real mission to remove - so will do it at home.

Also, as I said before, all hoses in and out of radiator and on the sides, get hot - so I guess I can rule airlock out?

Will test the fan tonight at home.

Checked the car again when I got home. Got underneath it noticed the main power plug to fan motor was very loose.
Reseated it and made sure it was plugged in tightly.
Problem solved!

So glad I didn't have to buy new parts lol.

Thanks for the help guys.

Stupid plug!

I once changed a motor because of a loose needle and seat in the carb, when the new motor had the same problem as the old one I looked a bit harder and found out why... :bang:
