water temp light flashing

Post by FM1 »

my dad has a mk2 csl 1.6 carb. stock std

lately on the dash, the water temp needle moves in a few seconds to high after ignition startup. after starting up it would take about 1min for the needle to go from 0 - Max.

we had the sensor changed on the water bottle and the water temperature sender changed, sounds like the same thing. the one is located on a water pipe that goes the block
and the other one is located on the water bottle where you fill up.

yet after changing these, the problem still occurs, can it be something only an electrician will be able to sort out?

btw the fan does cum on after the needle jumps to high and the car does not over heat

If it was the cluster the fan shouldn't come on. Does the fan come on even when the motor is cold?
It can also be that the wire to the temp sender is shorting to earth.

im not sure at when the fan kicks in, it doesnt go on when the car is fully cold, like standing overnight, but if u let the engine run for a couple of minutes then the fan runs in afterwards

then the fan seems ok,
then its either the cluster or the wire to the temp sender is shorted to earth somewhere...

The thing on the bottle is a level sensor not a temp sensor. That lwts the light flicker. But if the temp goes to full hot on display it will also flicker despite the fact that the level is correct. If the display always goes full temp then yes you either have a short to earth on the wire or the cluster unit is faulty
