Difference in branches?

Good day guys,

I would just like to find out real quick the differences in branches, 4-1 and 4-2-1, like which is more for top end and which is more for bottom end, that kind of difference? Not taking to mind a specific brand, just general information?

Thinking of fitting a system on my 1.6i citi golf.
