Starter grinding noise

Post by fredflin »

Hi

When starting my 1996 golf I get a grinder noise similar to the noise you get if you hold the key in start position after the car has started. Someone told me I need to service the starter bendix and also said that one needed to jack the engine up slightly as part of this process.

Does this make sense and if so could someone please describe the process in a little more detail.

Thanks

It's like 2 nuts, open them and remove the starter completely and when the starter is out u can asses and repair the bendix

One thing I've learned over the past 6 years, is that you should rather just save a little and get a new starter. A reconditioned Bosch unit with all new internals (they just use an old starters' casing) at GW it something like R800. It will save you lots of hassles down the line and could possibly work out cheaper.

Have a look at your flywheel as well, it could be that your flywheels' teeth are a bit worn, but I doubt it.

I would start off by taking the starter out and having a good look at it.. give the solinoid power and see it it pushes the bendix out properly and if when you take the power of it retracks properly .. It might just be dirty and a good clean with petrol might solve the issue of it might be the solenoid causing the problem.

Replacing it can also work just remember to replace the little copper bush in the block .

And the jacking up of the engine part? When does that come into it?

You can put a jack underneath your gearbox bell housing before removing the starter so the engine doesn't sag when removing the bolts, can be a mission to get them back in again if the holes dont line up properly. Remember to also replace the brass/copper bush in the block as joggie mentioned

You don't need to jack the engine up hey. The front mount should stay in the same position.
