Citi golf side shaft problem?

Post by PeterSusmak »

Check video for problem:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCU7l_X9RKQ

Anyone know if my citi golfs side shaft should have this much play on it, reason im asking is my cv joints on the right is starting to give in, hearing it on turns to the right and driving, and might replacing the cv fix this play on the shaft or should it move like that?

yes it's normal and correct. Remeber as the suspension compress the shaft gets pushed towards the gearbox. if no play the cv cage will simply break in two.

Seems alright to me.

I've had issue before with the driveshaft turning alot more than seemed necessary before the CV would start turning. On both occassions (and sets of CVs) I found the splines on the CV were just to large a diameter for the driveshaft splines. Both occassions they were SOLIDs. Very irritating 'cos when you coast for a bit, then add gas it produces a massive knock as that slack gets taken up.

Another issue was the inner cage portion of the inner CV would move in and out along the driveshaft because some "professional" had no idea which way to install the tensioning concave washer.

How old are you CVs now?

Ok no thanks panic, then wont worry too much.

@2226cc: I do not know how old the cv's are as i bought the car second hand and the previous owner doesn't know anything.

The only thing that iritates me is that when i turn to the right, like a curve, it would make that exact sound from the video, but i know the right cv is making a click so will need to change it, maybe that will help. The sounds only started when i removed the drop kit and put back normal springs?

Cost me around R600 for the inner and outer CVs per shaft. I might have picked up some other small parts at the same time so bill might be cheaper. I'm getting too old to remember. They were SKF from goldwagen. These use a different retaining clamp than I was used to though so if you want to do it yourself get the tool to tie it properly. They have other brands too which might use the other strap so just check when you go there.

Rebuilt shaft cost me 750 each and just wasn't worth it.
