Cam for 2.0 8v N/A motor

Post by U3 »

hi All

i know this has been discussed and people are always asking what cam for my car etc, so i did some reading and now i have a few questions.

1. how do i identify the cam model and degrees? like how would i know if its a g-cam or an a-cam etc.
2. been reading a lot of good reviews on a 282 cam in a stock 2.0 8 valve. what sort of improvement would the 282 make on a stock mk3GTi engine on mp9. some points i read said stock mp9 will be fine. others say best is to get aftermarket management.

that's it for now. thanks guys. always the best information i get here.

Well I cannot comment on running a higher duration cam on MP9 as mine has always been on management, however, what I can say is that I went from a 276 to a 288 and much prefer the 288.... it pulls harder for longer and no down torque is still there....certainly enough for a daily drive anyway...

I am having some fine tuning issues that need to be sorted out still, which make the car a little finicky on partial throttle (also, I am not tuned on TPS, which in hindsigh would probably have been a better option)....

Just my 2c.....

Well from what I have read on this forum, stay away from *** and only go with Estas... you can also PM Nellis on the forum who will be able to tell you how to confirm you in fact have an Estas cam (in good condition)....

276 will be perfect for 2l 8v...my other golf running with a gotech is making 93wkw and torque is sky high

we are doing some tests so read a bit here

for stock cam specs

http://vwclub.co.za/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=146892

I will be fitting a 288 or 298 soon before month end hopefully so we can see impact of that on 2.0...

thanks VWicked. i have read through that post and thats what got me thinking a lot more about a cam upgrade. and so far the 282 seems to be the best balance. i dont want to go too wild.

but everyone has excellent things to say of their cam that its difficult to choose. and since purchasing a cam isnt like a quick cheap or easy thing to do, its something that you really want to be 100% comfortable with when you decide.

im leaning very much to either 282 or 276 cam. and i PM'd Nellis on another forum, if i want the brand new 282 i will have to save a bit. so il keep looking and reading for the next 2-3 months while i save for it.

On a standard MP9 you might have idling problems with a 282, especially when the engine is cold.
Most of the aftermarket systems can handle the wider cams.
Spitronics works fine with a 298 cam on my 1800.

282 is a baby cam for a 8V go bigger and make more you have coastal air to compromise the bottom end lag.

Do yourself a favour and drive a car with the cam you are looking at first, cams are as much about personal preference as colour on a car. everyone is different

There is nothing special about a g-cam, it's a stock cam!
Big difference going to 276 from a g-cam.
