8v Camshaft Shootout - Some results with pic

Post by VWicked »

Hi,

So I am back to the age old question of which camshaft is best. Some say, it depends on what you want and where in the rev range you want the power and what mods have been done to the car.

So I proposed a test with good ol Panic Mechanic on his dyno to help the fellow guys out there with which cam does what where. The car that will be dummied for the test is a CTi 2.0 8v shortblock still on kjet.

The car currently has a 268 cam in it as I found out last night. I have access to a stock A cam, stock D cam and the 268. I can possibly get hold of a 282 cam for testing but what I need help with is the remaining ones, 272, 276 and 288 (perhaps wilder if my car can manage it).

Anyone out there got a cam to lend for testing? You are welcome to come with it to the dyno and see the results.

Regards
Jashan

Should be interesting...

Will like to come and have a look.. the 288 should still work but bigger you might run into clearance issues.

You welcome to come through, you can help me swop them out hehe.

288 will definitely work and i would think max on that car but if we get a wilder test unit and I will fill some nice 95 we can see what it does.

Maybe not a few but at least one so we can swop. Maybe before the time we can convert your car to the rubber gasket setup.

Ok I am comfortable doing that as I do need to buy a new gasket anyway. Will that stock tappet work with the rubber gasket?

Easy to do, you need to pull the studs out and replace with M6 bolts, I used s/s cap screws.

Okay I don't understand why this would make a difference? is its an m6 stud and nut vs if its a bolt

The stud got a built-in spacer for the cork gasket.

Ah makes sense, so basically you cant tighten it enough if you use rubber gasket?

The cork gasket has a bolt with a collar that holds the gasket in place so youbpull them out and either replace with a stud with no collar or bolts.
Definately not doing that amount of work on 2 cars unless somebody else volunteers to do the actual cam swops.
