ADVICE NEEDED : Engine replacement for 1977 VW T3 Snail

Post by LeeN777 »

Hi, I need advice on an engine replacement. I have a 1.8 water cooled 1977 VW T3 snail. Max speed is 80km. I need a stronger engine for a bit more speed and I need to pull a trailer as well. Im not sure which make engine would be compatible/suitable. I hope a 2.2l or a tad stronger should do the trick :? Any advice will be appreciated! :)

Is this the flat four boxer engine? Dual barrel carb? If so is actually a 1.9l.

That motor is plenty strong and quite durable, unlike the 2.1 motors.

I think you should perhaps look into getting the motor tuned up and serviced back to factory specs.

My one mate had one some time back the same as yours and it was well capable of highway speeds.

Hi Missioner,
Thanks for your advice and info.
Good to know that there are alternatives to replacing the engine in this case. My snail has very little to no torque and it will be great if there are other options to correct that. My brother will look into your suggestions. Thank you!
