Amarok whining sound

Post by Ilikepie »

Hello all

I got. A 2015 amarok 2.0 bitdi auto 4x2, mileage is just over 200k km. A month ago there started a intermittent whining noise. Sounds like it's coming from the back of vehicle?

The vehicle has full service and belt, water pump, power steering pump changed about 9 months ago at 180k km, zf transmission oil was done 18 months ago at about 170k km.

Is there any common issue with this? What could the issue be?

Diff maybe?
Even though I haven't read of any issues with them, other than the switch for the diff lock failing.

I took a video of the sound, wonder if it's an easy fix....

Rear wheel bearings? Hopefully not too expensive to fix? Will pop by VW to check later in the week. Thanks for the help.

You mean the high-pitched wee-oo-wee-oo... almost like an alarm?
I've never heard such a noise off wheel bearings. They normally create a low rumble that changes to a hum as you increase speed.

Is it dependent on speed?

Yeah that’s the sound. Brought it in to Steve auto clinic yesterday to have it checked out, tech said it may be the prop shaft? He’s never heard noises like this before….Will see what they say…. Hopefully nothing too serious….

Again: is the noise dependent on speed? That would point to the drive train. If not, it might be completely unrelated, I dunno, perhaps fuel pump failure or something such...

Yeah, the sound isn’t there when stationary, it doesn’t get louder or increase in frequency when driving faster. From 40km-80km it sounds the same, anything faster the wind noise overlaps this noise…. Hopefully nothing expensive…

Well, in my books that's a key bit of information, because if neither the frequency nor the volume increases with speed, then it's highly unlikely to be on the drivetrain.

If it were mine, I'd consider putting the rear axle on a dyno and have it cruise at about 50, while someone searches for the noise.

So it turned out the noise was from prop shaft, apparently gearbox problem….they said oil pump in gearbox might be going out…. Just had the zf serviced at zf Edenvale last April…. Damn.

Really strange that a propshaft would make a noise that doesn't increase frequency with speed. But anyhow, good luck...

Fresh update. So I brought the Amarok to ZF edenvale back in Jan, they advised the transmission was going. The planetary gear is worn... They said this is a very common issue on ZF and my Amarok was lucky (at 210k km) only having this issue so late. They've seen many as low as 60k km with this issue. Apparently the components were made out of aluminium and easily worn due to high torque from engine ... Cost is R38k to replace the planetary gear. Advice from them was to drive it until engine light comes on then come in for the repair.

Brought the vehicle in for service at vw greenstone and asked them to give a second opinion. Service adviser said the prop shaft was worn and will cost R23k to replace. Got one of the indie to have a look and indeed the center bearing was squeaky. Cost R5600 at vw to buy, or R3000 at goldwagen. None have stock so I'm waiting on it.

Hope these would help some owners when experiencing this noise/issue. //cloud.tapatalk.com/s/62a03f36bd6 ... WA0007.mp4
