74kw turbo upgrade for reliability

Post by CarLoss »

Good day all

My car is currently on 183k kms and I believe my turbo is fine, I need to do long distance driving with my car and can’t afford a breakdown and knowing the reputation on these turbos I’m looking to upgrade.

I’m not in the budget to go full send on something like a 1756 with full fmic and piping, so what are my other options? Hybrid my current turbo? Run the 96kw turbo on stock intercooler with a mild file?

Not looking for mad power just yet just looking for reliability would appreciate some direction thanks

Is your car tuned with the stock turbo?

That's normal. Mines whines when cold and it did over 12000kms like that and still going strong. You should be fine.

You will know when your turbo is going out as it won't just die, it will whine when warm, lose boost pressure, loss of power, vanes will get stuck, etc.

Maybe upgrade to the 96kw turbo (around 12k from Goldwagen, OE) or just by another 74kw turbo(around 8k from Goldwagen, also OE).

Remember you still have to factor in tuning, bigger intercooler, etc.

If you want to keep it stock, do so as they are extremely reliable. Modding tends to bring reliability issues.

Let's put it this way. If you put a new 74kw turbo, you should be fine for another 150 000kms. If you really worried about it, change it and keep your old turbo incase at a later stage something goes wrong, you have a spare.

You will save on tuning, parts cost, bigger turbo cost and know it's going to be very reliable because it is stock.

Things to improve reliability include -
- EGR delete, prevents soot from clogging intake, better fuel consumption.
- Bigger intercooler, cold air always is better.
- Use VW 505.01 spec oil.
- Cat delete, reduces back pressure on turbo.

Interesting, sounds like a plan will have to get costings on that. Maybe even after the new turbo put a stage 1 file just to get the most out of it since it’ll be new

Tuning file will stress your turbo. If you want to tune it safely and for reliability, go for the 96kw turbo, bigger intercooler and a stage one tune.

If you want reliability, treat the car well in terms of maintenance, servicing, mechanical sympathy and otherwise leave it alone. Replace the turbo when it is at the end of it's life with a similar unit, the PD100's never gave many issues from what I remember, even PD130's that were looked after well were reliable. Take a look @VGTI 9n Polo which is over 400k km's from what I remember on the stock turbo and clutch...
