OBD2 Scan tool

Post by PeterTech »

Hi guys

What is the best OBD2 Scan tool to use on cars sold in South Africa. What is your view on these cheap phone based Bluetooth OBD2 Scan tools found on Amazon???

The best is probably some of the bosch or snap op units. The cheap phone scanners dont work. They dont pick up codes as they should. The engine light would be on and the cheapy scanner wont pick up a fault. If you specifically want a scan tool for VW then go with a genuine VCDS cable from Ross Tech

Launch crp129 works on most obd2 cars. Doesn't have any special features, good enough for codes and viewing live data.

I tried it on the ffg makes
1. Vw (entire vag group, as measuring blocks)
2. Bmw
3. Merc incl sprinter
4. Ford
5. Opel
6. Reno
7. Peugeot
8. Toyota
9. Fiat

Probably forgotten 1 or 2, but it lists about 30 different manufacturers

For a more basic system that's still reasonable, I have a Delphi clone OBD tool for my laptop.

On special with an adapter bundle they're around R2000.

Better on the eastern cars, but I've used mine on Audi, BMW, Mini, Renault, Peugeot, Nissan, Dodge, GWM, JMC, Ssangyong, VW, Chrysler, Ford, Chev, Opel, and a few more I cant remember right now.

Take some of the results with a pinch of salt and look up the DTC on the internet to get better descriptions.

Some of the functions on some cars dont work as advertised, but the important ones do.

One nice feature is the eOBD button that uses generic protocol to let you read codes and look at live data.

Thanks guys. I also noticed that the Torque app which is used with these cheap Bluetooth OBD2 scanners is getting good reviews on the internet. Maybe it is worth a try.

I have the torque app but it doesn't let you access the various modules of the car, unless I don't have the latest version of the app?

I might be wrong but from my experience with generic OBD2 scanner, you will not have access to all modules and functionality - which for me begs the question as to whether they can really detect all errors if any at all

Generic OBD is only for emissions problems.

It's designed with vehicle testing centers in mind and only has to scan for legally required emissions related fault codes as per EU and US standards. No ABS, SRS (airbag), body error codes can be scanned or cleared.

Viecar works well with torque scanner, carista and other scanning app in the market. In my opinion if all you wanna do it's scan your car and access certain info then will work just fine - way better than generic. OBD2 scanner out there Image

Doesn't the Viecar require an annual subscription of about $20?

No it doesn't. I have used mine with apps such as Torque Pro, Dash Command and Carista

Works all the time and unlike some of the cheap Obd scanners, it reads/diagnose everything

Sorry for the hijack but where else can one buy this? Takealot doesn't have this anymore.
And will this unit work on an Audi A5?
