Serpentine Belt and Tensioner

Post by Stefan0909 »

Hi all

Do you replace the serpentine belt and tensioner when you do a cambelt and water pump replacement?

Look at the condition, the first serpentine belt on my Polo outlasted the Alternator one way Pulley/Bearing dinges.

When the Pulley went, it climbed off the shaft and landed on the chassis leg with the belt somewhere in the engine bay. I replaced the pulley, belt and tensioner at the same time.

The pulley will let you know in advance when it starts failing, with the typical fanbelt noises when switching the AC on. Until then just leave it unless the belt looks real bad.

Well the tensioner is making a clucking noise, that is why I'm asking

serpentine belt - Not a must but if it looks like its time i.e cracks , then it's time.
Tensioner - Yes while you there and have everything off.

Just had the cambelt, water pump and pulley replaced on 167k km for preventative measures. After that was done now the serpentine pulley is making a noise.

Mechanic said you need to remove the serpentine belt etc to get to the cambelt an pulleys.

Does anyone have an idea more or less price wise how much it would cost me?

Not sure what is required for the Tig but on my Polo the belt and tensioner were quite cheap from the dealers. The Alternator pulley is the more expensive one but should be available from GW. Got mine from Diesel Electric.

You need the spline tool to get the pulley off, if you want to have a go at it DIY you can borrow the spline tool from me...

The alternator pulley is essentially a one way bearing which allows the alternator to keep "momentum when the rest of the motor slows down. When it fails it does not allow that putting strain the downstream items causing squeek or other noises.

Thanx, I will call GW and get a price from them. I think the best would be to replace the serpentine belt and the tensioner and maybe the pulley, then I know it is good for another 160k km or so.

Ok so I was at another mechanic for second opinion and he listened with his stethoscope and it is the fan belt tensioner that is faulty.

Will get it replaced soon
