PD130 ASV issue

Post by Iqbal »

Hi guys,

Please excuse the long post. My Sportline is giving me an issue. Cold she starts and runs like a dream. As soon as she is warm, she will not start. By that I mean she takes on first turn and immediately shuts off. What I've found, is that the ASV actuator extends and stays extended. Only way car will start is if I disconnect the vacuum line to the ASV. Car will then start and run, minus any boost.

Can I block off this vacuum line? Will the car boost if I do this?
Planning on fitting a race pipe to address this issue, but not familiar with how exactly this will sort the issue out.

Thanks

If boost is also affected then there's Most likely a problem with the vacuum solenoid box, turbo vacuum leaking into the asv port.
I personally never seen these boxes fail, the worst Iv seen them is making a clicking/buzzing sound but still work fine.

U can blank off the asv pipe. Not sure if that would fix the problem if the box is faulty.

If u have vcds and vac gauge u can do a quick test.

Unfortunately don't have a vac gauge. While running, VCDS doesn't throw out any errors. When stalled, it threw out a whole lot of short to ground errors, which I assume was because the engine was not running. Hoping it's not a vacuum box issue, as then the race pipe solution would not be a proper solution in the long term.
Where can I get a vacuum gauge from?

Thanks

When the car starts and there's no boost, is there no fault codes?

I would do basic settings on grp 11 (ecu will basically turn the turbo off and on) and see if u get vacuum on the turbo actuator pipe. U should get like +-22inmg vacuum there.

If the actuator vacuum ends up at the asv pipe then the box is probably shot.

U can get a vacuum gauge from shops like autostyle.. U could probably use a boost gauge that has vacuum measurements, if u have 1.

If not, get a vacuum gun from a toolshop, also helps with setting turbos, bleeding brakes (not on polos) , bleeding clutches, etc..

When cold, car runs great and has boost. No error codes. Have not run VCDS with the ASV hose disconnected. Will do so over the weekend and feed back.

So...
Some feedback:
Car is no longer boosting after I closed of the ASV hose.
VCDS threw out the following:
17932 - Fuel Pump Relay (J17)
P1524 - 35 - 10 Open or short to ground - Intermittent
17849 - EGR valve - (N18)
P1441 - 35 - 10 - Open Circuit or short to ground - Intermittent
19561 - Valve for Intake Manifold Flap (N239)
P3105 - 35 - 10 Open or short to ground - Intermittent
18027 - Glow Plug Relay (J52)
P1619 - 35 - 10 Open or short to ground - Intermittent
17957 - Boost Pressure Regulation Valve (N75)
P1549 - 35 - 10 Open or short to ground - Intermittent
Readiness: 1 3 1 1 1

Got these errors with mine and a swapped out vacuum box
Also complained about ignition switch - unknown position.

Noticed that fuel hose has a nick in it near the bypass valve on the filter.

I'm just surprised at all the errors thrown out so suddenly.
If I understand this right, a race pipe to bypass the ASV is not going to solve anything, as there is something else wrong, to throw out so many errors.
I'm wondering if the ignition switch could be a large part of the problem. Or rather, I'm hoping that it is the reason and a simple issue to resolve.

Any advice appreciated as always.

can be as simple as a fuse. Many of those items share the same power supply.

Check the fusible links on the battery.

I've had a few that crack and make intermittent open circuit.

Common issue these, can make you crazy chasing faults all over the car. Also make sure the battery terminals are secure and not corroded.

+1 on the fuses

Check if the ffg fuses have power
Fuse 4 (5A) clutch position switch
Fuse 14 (10A) vac box
Fuse 40 (30A)

If not, all those fuses including the fuel pump and glow plug relay is controlled by the Engine Control relay which is relay number 15

Thanks guys.

Will definitely check it out.

I'll let you guys know what I find.

@Ashveer03, Where are the relays on the Polo located?

On the right hand side of the steering column, there's a plastic cover that pops out, relays are in there.

If u look inside where the fusebox is, ul see the relays in there

Feedback:

Checked all fuses. Fuse that unlocks door when removing key was blown (replaced).
Replaced the relay as a precaution, but no difference.

On friends suggestion, checked harness from ECU, as it was possible that rats could have gotten to it. All wiring was fine, but when disconnected and reconnected ECU, all faults cleared and car was fine. Closing the bonnet caused engine to die and error codes returned. Reseated the connectors and everything was fine again.

I suspect that the ECU is packing up, and I need to start hunting for a replacement.

Moisture in harness? If somebody was there before, possible spreaded terminals on the plugs?

Probably check for continuity between the ecu and the vac box.

EcuXpress in jhb can test and repair ecus
