What fuel consumption on a TDI

Post by PeterTech »

Hi guys

What is your average fuel consumption on your TDI. I do a lot of long distances with my speeds in between 100 and 120 KM/H and my fuel consumption is between 5.5 and 6.5 liters per 100KMs. Only once did I manage to get 1350KMs on a single 55 liter tank and I was doing speeds between 80 and 105 KM/H.
My car is a 2011 VW polo 1.6 TDI.

I think my figures are quite heavy since the car is stated at 4.2 liters per 100KMs . What do you guys get?

I currently drive a 2.0 tdi dsg golf 7 and do about 200km a day from the vaal to midrand and back and speeds vary from 130 on the highway to crawling traffic. Overall consumption over the 50 000km I’ve done so far is 4.8 l/100km (according to trip computer). Sometimes if i drive conservatively from midrand back to the vaal (slight downhill) and traffic is flowing the “since start” trip average sometimes drops to 4.2 l/100km

I had a 1.6 tdi Jetta 6 before that and consumption was very similar.

Bear in mind that the manufacturer's claimed fuel consumption figure is obtained in laboratory conditions and are as perfect as can be. In theory, you can get close, but real world conditions include hills, traffic, wind, rolling resistance, driving style and so forth.

The figures you quote appear to be spot on as an average. Over 160 000km of ownership, my VW Caddy 1.9TDi uses between 5,7 l/100km and 6,3 l/100km on the open road. Last trip to Howick and back in December, 5 persons and heavily loaded was 5,9 l/100km average.

Like the guys said... it depends a lot on your driving style and the routes you travel.

Your consumption sounds a little high for a Polo 1.6TDI but again it depends on the amount of highway driving that you do.

My best consumption ever was 3.5l/100 over a tankfull and around 3 weeks. But getting to that will put most people in the looney bin!

@vgti...i thought as much that my fuel consumption is a bit high since I only do speeds in between 100 and 120 km/h. I feel I should be getting around 4.5 to 5.5 litres per 100 kilometers. Any suggestions on what might be causing the high consumption?

Just to reitterate, it is very difficult to predict what the consumption should be and what I said above is purely my opinion based on my own experience.

1. Fuel consumption is directly related to your right foot and your route traveled. If you have a lot of uphills obviously it will be higher but if that is on your daily commute it should at least average out.
2. Stop/Start traffic is a killer for diesels and consumption, how much of your commute include stop/start traffic?
3. I assume your reports are based on the readout of your OBC? If so you have a long term and trip OBC, trip OBC usually resets after 2 hours of the car being switched off. Which one do you use? They can also not be fully trusted... they vary between 0.3 - 0.5 to actual consumption. (Own experience again)
4. Get actual consumption figures, fill you tank to the brim, reset your trip counter, drive for a week and fill it to the brim again. Calculate the consumption.
5. Hard acceleration... nice in a TDI with all the torque but killer for good consumption.
6. Aircon... yes, we cannot go without it on the Highveld but it will add 0.5l/100km. The manufacturer's claimed figures will exclude this little factor.

Just a few points but nr. 4 is imperrative! Without that you are guessing...

Give me the car for a week and I'll tell you if you have an issue    Even a day will do

In my Mk4 TDI, if traffic flows reasonably well, and I stick to the speeds described in the opening post (without aircon), I get 4.5 to 4.8 l/100km. Personally, under those conditions, anything over 5.5 would prompt me to investigate.

I always keep a log and monitor my actual consumption. Fortunately the trip computer is very close to this - normally within 5-10%. I also make a point of checking the speedometer and odometer in each car that I own. My Mk4's odo is quite close, although the speedo shows about 4 km/h too high (at all speeds).

in my GTD long road steady driving @ 110km/h is around 5 and my daily commute is around 10, 8km of start stop driving so that sucks.

Best consumption to date with my Caddy has been 6,38L/100 (705km to reserve, 55 litre tank).
That is mixed driving in all conditions and using hooligan torque mode often.
Also incuded hauling a full load of household stuff for a friend from Pta to Jhb in peak hour traffic.

Not bad for a 2.0TDI with stage 1 software.
Right foot = fuel consumption.

I will check in Feb how it will be on a trip to Durbs loaded with 4 adults and luggage.

@Deranged..... You know I had to drive like a 80 year old granny to achieve 1350KM on a 55 litre tank which equals 4 liters per 100KM . You get to your destination and you are so tired.
I think car manufactures should state the speed at which they achieved their fuel consumption figures, something like 4.2L/100 @80KM/H on a freeway should be more appropriate.

Reading posts like this makes me miss my Polo, the car replacing my R will more than likely be a TDi but hopefully of the larger variety.

You have always struck me as a very patient person and achieving 4.75km/100 effortlessly does not surprise me at all given your previous record that is still standing.

Btw, what is the current mileage on the Polo?
I still say that, the polo is in a league of its own and just continues doing its daily duties.

I am sure with your Durban trip coming up, it should get down decently.

Have you read all my previous posts in this topic? I have given you plenty pointers...

There are no secrets to get between 4.5 and 5.0 I just drive but if you want to let it drop to 3.5 you need some stabilisers and a different personality!

Again, maybe something is wrong with your car but you need to follow my previous posts before you can establish that...

My car is 14 years old, I have driven it for most of the 371000km and know it better that the back of my hand...

When I had a 74kw 1.9 tdi I averaged around 4.8 to 5.8 l/100km. Now that I have a 96kw with FMIC and software I average around 6.4 l/100km.
