Vw mk4 tdi turbo replaced. Boost comes late

Post by Cass »

Hi all.
As per topic. My mk4 has hit 350000 and decided to swap the turbo. Got a Mahle from Gw.

Swap out as best i could working from top and bottom, replacing the turbo and jntake gaskets/and cleaning out the manifold and egr.

Car starts and idles fine.
On a hard pull..the car feels 'mild' with boost only coming in strong at 2000rpm.

Qestion...should i book my car for diagnostic scanning...and actuator adjustment?..

The old turbo worked ok..just showing its age and sometimes got sticky vanes causing limpmode.

Thanks in advance

I swapped out most of the 3mm vavuum pipes...working from the airfiter to the n75 then to the n18 solenoid..replacing them one by one.

Still the same. Boost kicks in after 2k rpm. So i swapped the n18 and n75 solenoids...however no luck.

Its really something small methinks...just not sure why the boost comea late

Actuator might not be set properly, run a log on the car and check if the requested boost matches the actual boost..

Will do. Thank you. I was under the impresion the new turbo would be pre-set.

If not ; should one use a vacuum guage to see how far the actuator arm moves under full vacuum?...i recall reading something like this once

you really should not need to play with the vanes adjustment on a brand new turbo. They are factory pre set.

Change it. Airflow meter messes bigtime with how and where boost is delivered.

Cass, I've just traced this thread from your remarks in another thread.

Did you ever replace the MAF sensor, and did it have the desired result?

I ask this because my new turbo (Honeywell Garrett GT 1749V, OEM spec), fitted late last year, is behaving pretty much as you've described: when giving the car some boot, it's "mild" under 2000 rpm and then the boost comes pretty suddenly. I haven't logged the car, as it hasn't bothered me all that much. Just wanted to find out whether you'd made any progress.
