panic-mechanic wrote: Tue Mar 05, 2019 1:36 pm Not much terrible stuff. The v6 tdi has been around for a LOOONNGG time and have proven very reliable. basics like fan belt and pulleys at around 160k km. - anti roll bar bushes. Shock top rubbers at around 200k km..
the odd one here and there that has front diff bearings that gets noisy.
very rareish gearbox valve body issue.
100k ish is barely run in - not highish km for them.
Thanks for the input Stephan, I appreciate it and I am eternally grateful to have die hard VW fans like yourself around.

Exactly  If it is out of warranty and/or maintenance plan, I wouldn't necessarily head to VW all the time.

Not really. They seem to be very robust in the electronics department
  • What are your thoughts on the air suspension?
- No issues. Pump head that wears at like 300k km. Odd airbag here and there - also mainly on cars now approaching 300 to 400k km.
  • Any features to stay away from?
nope. Can't think of anything to avoid.
  • Any features that are a must?
Air suspension is really nice to have. terrain tech is really nice to have if you plan to offroad seriously (low range) and it was only available on the v6. Not on the v8 TDi.

Finding a good indy to do reliable jobs is not easy. Have been burned on this on a number of occasion - guys like yourself are very very rare to find. I remember taking my Golf to Steve's Auto in Midrand when the tensioners failed and the result was buying a complete engine a month later. With the dealers you really buying safety in case they stuff up.

I saw a quote for R78k last year for engine removal and two turbos.
Guy came to me and asked if we can do rather just one turbo or see what the issue is as VW refuses to do anything but simply replace the two turbos.
Dropped the motor to find a bolt had come loose from the turbo housing and stopped the vane controller from going full movement.
I put locktite on it and tightened it. Turbo problem solved.
While there we saw the tandem pump leaking. So i changed that, did EGR blank and few odds and ends. Bill was R19k to the customer.
He paid it with a smile and was on his way seeing he just saved R59k.

On a left field topic, did any of the before-last-gen touareg infotainment systems offer carplay?
Seems like there was two systems on offer - satnav RNS850 (button in the middle) and RCD550. Not much mention of carplay but seems odd they would not offer it on a 'premium" vehicle as recently as 2018

Donno. It's something I have never had and really don't take note of. Very lost school in that respect. I don't buy or leave cars based on 'gadgets' or something like carplay.

Neuk wrote: Mon Mar 04, 2019 4:18 pm So, my Golf was at Hatfield VW in Bryanston today so I popped in to the MasterCars section to see what they had, mainly in terms of Touareg's. They had a white 2014 3.0 V6 TDi that I am waiting for the details, mileage is at 121k km's and it has an extended motorplan until 140k km's or late 2020. I still have little ide of what to replace the Golf with or if I should replace her now but I am looking around anyway.
120K mileage is still good on those, on top of that you can get an aftermarket warranty before the factory plan expires that covers you another 2 years and unlimited mileage which will cost you usually less the R300 per month. if you can get an R-line for sub 400K with no more than 120K mileage I think you will have a good deal.

The other option is an Amarok, lots of choice with a budget of say 400K and you will get mileage sub 100K.

it's tiring to take pictures and post - when you need to get work done for customers it's a pain to do updates etc. Yes use the same table with basically a dedicated frame that fits the touareg setup. I have some pics - just painfull to upload to a hosting site and post. I'll do some at a stage.

Love the Touareg, just fuel consumption on the 3.0 V6 is a bit high on short runs/stop and go with no highway driving.

Planning on having it remapped
