It should probably be in the 8-9 km/l area or 11-12 l/100lm.
They are not great on consumption as a short commute car. Almost no full sized SUV in that class will be Great on consumption.
I will provide figures Stephan, I normally fill a R1000 at a time, this time its full and will let you know what I get on a tank, but I can say its roughly 13-15 l/100km

What's it like as a daily drive? I'd be using it for the same things.

Its an awesome drive, solid car, premium feel, not to bad on the bumpy roads, I do not have air suspension and overall its great and comfortable on long distances too, with lots of space. Power delivery is also great, its right there when you need it, this car is no slouch for its size even though its a heavy car.

I had 2.0 TDI Tiguan before this, that was an awesome car and perfect for the daily school runs, but, no space.

I love love love my v10 , but if you can't do stuff like remove that engine yourself then maintenance will COST you bigtime.

But literally ANYTHING other than oil changes is an engine out job on the v10.
noob question: Besides turbos being changed, what else would necessitate engine out? Ball park what would count as big time cost?

I am looking at the V10, would not mind a V8 but since I have the same engine in the Audi would want something different.

so honestly literally any work you have to do other than a service is engine out. Starter change - Engine out, Tandem pump change - engine out.
Cracked manifold - engine out.
Alterantor change - engine out.
Power steering pump - engine out
aircon pump - engine out.
Oil leak at the back - engine out.
18 hours labour just fir that - not the other work.

3l v6 tdi - best of the bunch between power, consumption, maintenance.

Hmmm, maybe I must just stay away from the Treg completely. My ego doesn't want a V6. I was really keen on the V10 - simply cos I have never owned one.

Indeed. That's quite pricy. I no longer spend that money on cars unless it is a landcruiser.

Consensus seems to be the V6 - sensible choice. I could live with the V10 IF it doesnt break

So, my Golf was at Hatfield VW in Bryanston today so I popped in to the MasterCars section to see what they had, mainly in terms of Touareg's. They had a white 2014 3.0 V6 TDi that I am waiting for the details, mileage is at 121k km's and it has an extended motorplan until 140k km's or late 2020. I still have little ide of what to replace the Golf with or if I should replace her now but I am looking around anyway.

As I said in my rides thread, I am pleasantly suprised by how much I have enjoyed my van. Even though it is a old example, it is a nice place to be and they do alot of things really well. I can see the appeal of them, much more relaxing not having to worry about front lip scratching, damaging rims and the like. Perhaps we're all just getting older and more mature  I know I am (getting older that is, maturity, not so sure about) Can only imagine the later models with all the gizmos ..... do it!

What has surprised me is that they are actually very well priced. I'd love the older model, though the last generation is starting to appeal as a daily drive.

I know I am getting older  There are other reasons why I am looking at a more practical daily drive though...
  • In general driving on SA roads on a daily basis is a chore from traffic, taxi's, potholes, etc.
  • I have some need for a larger car than a Golf, from mountain biking to owning a dog to wanting to start a family.
  • I want to travel around SA a bit more and although my girlfriend has a Fortuner, a Touareg is a lot more practical for long distance travel.
  • I am keen for a car that I can keep for a long period of time that won't cost a fortune to run or maintain.
  • I want a more suitable weekend car and unfortunately I can't afford to pay off my R and keep it.
My one issue at the moment is the cost of low mileage previous generation Touareg's as I am also trying to reduce my monthly car related expenses so that I can focus on reducing our bond.

There is quite a few priced below 400k.

Anyway test drove the new one today - salesman insisted- quite very upmarket. Quite a lot of new tech that is not even in the current A8.
Unfortunately not in my price bracket, spending a bar+ is insane for me.

Yep, had a look on Autotrader and tehre are a few at below R400k and with less than 120k km's on them, even some R-Lines.

The one they had on the new showroom floor at Hatfield VW Bryanston yesterday was priced at a little over R1.4m

Yep, I have found a few R-Line's under R400k, mileage is on the high side at around 100k km's though. I need to do more research on what to look for and the potential pitfall costs over long time ownership.

Not much terrible stuff. The v6 tdi has been around for a LOOONNGG time (2005) and have proven very reliable. basics like fan belt and pulleys at around 160k km. - anti roll bar bushes. Shock top rubbers at around 200k km..
the odd one here and there that has front diff bearings that gets noisy.
very rareish gearbox valve body issue.
100k ish is barely run in - not highish km for them.
