Thermostat housing question
Hi guys,
Planning on changing my thermostat this afternoon. Polo 1.9 TDI ASZ.
To my knowledge, the thermostat has never been touched, with mileage on 300k+.
How brittle does the housing get, as I don't want to get stranded with a damaged housing when I try to remove it.
My understanding is it is quite expensive, as VW quoted me R1600 for the housing, if I understood the sales guy correctly.
Not sure if GW stock the housing, and what price they'd charge for it.
Thanks
Iqbal

Re: Thermostat housing question
When I changed mine I battled to get the pipe off the "housing" so I left it on and just bent the pipe to get access...
Undo the bracket that hold the vacuum reservoir in place to gain more access to work.
Then just take out the two size 10 bolts and change the thermostat... not much to it, took me less than an hour.

Re: Thermostat housing question
Thanks VGTI.
Stressboi, I'm in Centurion during the day.
Main worry is that the plastic might be brittle after so many years.

Re: Thermostat housing question
Already got the thermostat from VW. Just wanted to find out from the guys what the risk is of damaging the housing when I tackle it. Not keen on spending too much, unless really necessary. Where in Pta do I go, if I need to get it?

Re: Thermostat housing question
PRETORIA EAST SILVERTON CITY SPARES..... ITS GENUINE VW PRODUCTS THERE USED AND NEW
WHEN INSTALLING THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING BE VERY CAREFULL BECAUSE EVEN THE SLIGHTEST CRACK MEANS THE ENTIRE THING IS MESSED UP AND YOU HAVE TO GET A NEW ONE ,

As vgti said, the pipe can be a beach to come off. And i highly doubt that stupid plastic piece is R1600 even from vw. I think u looking at the wrong part.Iqbal wrote:Hi guys,

The thermostat is situated on the BLOCK, it will be behind the alternator/ac pump area.
Follow the lower radiator hose and it will take u to the thermo housing.

Going through the forum, someone posted a "how to", but the problem with old threads is that the pics no longer display. Will double check on price at VW. Will pop past GW and see if they stock the part, and how much.

Re: Thermostat housing question
Thanks. Cant't believe it can cost too much, even at VW. Thinking of doing the Coolant temperature sensor as well. Would the GW one be good enough, or should I stick to OEM?
Looking at the pic, should I put some sort of gasket maker as a precaution against a possible leak?

Re: Thermostat housing question
Gw coolant temp sensors work ok never had a problem with them..
The housing has an o-ring, u can clean it up and use a TOUCH of silicone on it.
Thermostat u rather get from vw, pirate ones tend to open too soon - the car wont reach operating temp quickly.

Re: Thermostat housing question
Shot bud. Got the thermostat from VW. Will pick up the coolant temp sensor on my way home. Will definitely use just a little bit of silicone. Always scared the stuff will get into the system and clog something.

Re: Thermostat housing question
U dont really need the silicone, but a little just on the o-ring wouldnt kill. Surfaces must be clean though

Re: Thermostat housing question
Hi guys,
So VW supplied the O-ring as well (priced separately). Got the Thermostat housing (included o-ring) from GW for about R110, as well as the coolant temperature sensor. The coolant sensor was very easy to do. Thermostat was relatively easy to do, based on the guidance I got on the forum.
Encountered 1 snag. bottom housing bolt managed to drop into the gap between the engine and Alternator mounting. Did not drop to the floor, but could not find it with my fat fingers or my daughter's thin fingers. Had to wait till this morning to buy a replacement bolt and close everything up.
Task was made much easier with the tips I got, but was not as scary as some made it out to be.
Thanks guys.
