I need some help and expertise to diagnose vehicle in subject that cranks but does not start. This vehicle has about 302 000km on the odometer and relatively trouble free for the last 150 000km. Serviced only at the dealer except for cambelt changes which I do myself and one or two instances where I had intermittent faults which the dealer was not able to fix within the scheduled service window.
The current problem I have is that the engine cranks but fails to start. The car died whilst driving with Glowplug Light coming on and the MFD displaying Engine Fault - Workshop. I was not able to restart it. At that point I was relatively low on fuel - eventhough I have driven with a much lower fuel level without issues in 285 000km I have owned the vehicle. At the time I only owned a basic OBD scanner and found only a single DTC which indicated 'Fuel Rail Pressure Low' - I accepted defeat and put this down to too low fuel level. I filled the tank, then primed both the in-tank and engine bay electric fuel pumps as per tutorial for the diesel filter change however, still only cranking and no starting. I then proceeded to bleed the HP fuel system between the HPFP and Injectors and managed to get the engine started. I left the engine to idle for a fair amount of time whereafter I decided to take the vehicle back home which is about 5 to 10km trip. On the way home I noted that the fuel guage was now not working and assumed that the electrical plug on the fuel tank pump unit was not in properly - a few kilometres into the journey the glowplug light appeared again, and the same engine fault - workshop warning appeared in the MFD, however, it did not cut out and only went into limp mode - which allowed me to get back home however, cut out just as I parked it in front of the garage. This time I assumed it must have been as a result of the electrical socket not completely inserted on the intank fuel pump. I then proceeded to prime pumps again (the hard way without VCDS) and prime the HP fuel system, however, have not been able to get it started again - now this is where I need help!
In order to diagnose the reason for cranking and not starting I have done the following:
1. Order VCDS,
2. Opened up diesel filter canister - inspected for any debris, alum filings etc. None found and also replaced filter even though it is only due for replacement in another 15000km.
3. Pulled the in tank fuel pump and inspect for any debris or blockages etc - some debris on screen but I guess it can be expected for a 300 000km vehicle.
I have now received my VCDS software and have worked through the basics of the software in order to use it. I have scanned for new DTC's and no new DTC's showed.
Any ideas where to start looking? I have looked at some basic items in VCDS such as the rpm's and fuel rail pressure during cranking. Crank rpm is between 200 and 300 rpm and fuel rail pressure around 240bar. Are these values high enough to release fuel injection? Can I check in VCDS if fuel is injected and is there perhaps some other parameters that might not be met that prevents injection and/or need to be reset?
