Why does a thicker oil provide better lubrication?
I read that somewhere beter for winter but believe its basicly the same
The only number that will benefit winter conditions is the 5 which both oils you listed have so there is zero winter difference between the two. The 40 is thicker at operating temperatures than the 30, that is the only difference but I don't understand why it would provide better lubrication.

Thanks Neuk , what was the best option 5w30 or 5w40 ?
Here it never goes below -3 but summers get very hot up to 45

It has been a long time since I looked at PD TDi oils since selling my 9n Polo SL but I seem to remember using 5w30.

In our moderate climate the weight makes very little difference. It's the additive package that combat the high shear forces in a PD engine.

:iagree: 5w30 is suggested one to use , but can use 5w40 , It's cheaper and easier to get hold of , at-least down here in CT

Oil brand is a personal preference if you familiar with the oils brands.
