If I had a choice, I wouldn't go near Castrol, I have used Shell for years on all my cars and have been very happy with it.

Why not Castrol ? I ran helix on all my vehicles , however after my wifes yaris service plan stopped i went from Toyota oil (total) to helix and found the engine more noisy than before , but i never had any issues with helix.

ANybody that uses castrol has never stripped an engine that ran on castrol all it's life. I'll never argue that they work and lubricate Ok - but man sludge and varnish is another story.

I have seen what oil passages etc look like after years of running Castrol oils

also cam wearing is very apparent in cars running castrol vs other leading correct spec brands

Deranged, if memory serves correctly, you have only used Castrol Edge Professional on the Polo and currently it is sitting on over 330 000km while being heavily modded and no issues with it to date.

You also using it in the Tiguan ne.

Polo gets oil changes every 7500km or now that I don’t use it often, before a drag event I would do oil service

Tiguan is 15000km interval

Maybe 7500km intervals is probably the reason u didnt have any sludge issues..

Also, we dont know how the "sludge engines" were maintained from new whether the service intervals were skipped or prolonged..

Toyota recommends castrol to most of their engines (2e/NZ vvti's, etc), if u look inside them - the sludge is scary.

I think so as well as Deranged is very sensitive with his oil changes.
Interestingly my daily Toyota Auris has been maintained using Shell oil from new by the dealer and even on their site, it is the recommended oil.
So i am also using using since i am doing the services myself.

Head was off at 260k odd for valves guides and valvestem seals. No issues at all. Also very little cam wear. Maybe I am the chosen one not to have issues with Castrol

But for my milleage, and cam wear indications I would def stick to Castrol Edge Prof till something else convinces me not too use Castrol anymore

Alot of opinions here . I went with Castrol. He had to do a special oder for me 5w30 505.01 approved as i read 5w30 has bit beter lube function over 5w40 . VW here says they only use castrol 505.01 approved oil.

As for shell as a toy mac we never used shell nor castrol only if clients wanted it. Total quartz is the " genuine " toyota oil and we never had issues , only when guys didnt service

I dont have anything bad to say about shell or castrol , both i would say is great oils . I change oil 5k - 7.5k , so the chance sludge will form i doubt that .

Why does a thicker oil provide better lubrication?
