1.4 TDI AMF no start

Hi All

I have a 1.4 tdi AMF motor, rebuilt, sub assembly, block sent in tested, all gaskets replaced.

Ever since the rebuild, the car would not start, first it started and died in 5 seconds, now it doesnt start at all.

changed filter, new diesel, pump primes when key is turned, unplugged the the fuel line, when you turn the key the diesel comes out for about 2 - 5 seconds, and stops, turn it off back on diesel pumps again,

used one of those cheap obd scanners gives error P0726, so i bought a new crank sensor, cleared the code, still the same. Code just keeps returning, car cranks very well, but wont start, when cranking, it kinda starts, but not exactly (sorry dont know how to explain that) white smoke comes from the exhaust diesel smell, nothing thick just light smoke like a Dunhill. lol.

didnt do that TSB i saw on here, im told it will only work on the new software, mine is still factory,

glow plug light flashes non stop (new plugs and harness) CEL on DTC P0726. car will just crank and crank forever. when i try start without the cam sensor plugged in, it just cranked doesnt even try to start, with cam sensor plugged in it atleast kinda starts, same with crank sensor.

I have googled alot of info before coming to the experts.

Any ideas I could try please guys would be appreciated. ASSEBLIEF TOG, im lost now

Is the injector lash and timing set properly?

Also verify if u have the fuel pipes in the correct position. It can be a little tricky

Howzit Panic, good memory man.

the car was someone else's about a year ago, it was standing in his garage when we initially rebuilt it, it didnt start then, so he just left it standing, i bought it from him last week, for next to nothing, i just couldnt let it go quitely into the night.

Its mine now in my garage, and I want to get it going, only car I have at the moment, I sold my Ballade, (kopseer)

The car is super clean,

Im in the west rand Melville area, ill still call you guy though, maybe he can advise me

Thanks again

Yup Give him a try. He is super clued up on those little cars. Still to this day I think it's cam timing based on the faults.
If he needs the car to look at it give me a shout on PM, I can move it for you.

The cam can only be locked in 1 position, most tdi locking tool sets i have seen have 2 crank locking tools and they both have the alignment arrow in different locations , check if the correct 1 was used.

Also set the cam pulley so that the 13mm bolts are more or less in the center of the slots, needs to be fine tuned with vcds

Have you checked that the glowplugs get voltage?

yes so i lock the cam on the left side through the hole in the cam and into the head, if you look behind the sprocket there is 2 finger type on the sprocket that must line up with the arrow on the plastic backing 3Z, Crank lines up, slightly to the left of the hole.

Think ill have to make a plan to buy VCDS,

Thanks for the feedback

Hi all, I'm new to this group and sits with the same issue...Car has been running like a watch for the last 8 years of owning it...It all started with it cutting out while driving and now just cranks and sometimes starting before cutting out again...Replaced Pump, water sensor, relay109, crank sensor, checked ignition. ..all seems fine...looks like a fuel starvation, where do I start and what cuts the fuel to the engine? PLZ HELP...

Common fialure on them is the fuel injector harnass.
